Ace wrote:I mostly get my sinking locations by checking for quarries on Google and Bing Maps, but I've never thought to check for dams before. So I searched for dams near me and, lo and behold, not only did I find quite a few, but there is apparently one very close to me that's called, I shit you not, Mud Mountain Dam.
Sounds like there could be some potential Glad to be of help! If the name of that place doesn't get you excited, I don't know what will. In my state, they post the water levels online. When I saw that it was lower over the weekend, I had to check it out!
Have fun at the 'mud mountain,' let us know how it goes for you!

Again, look for streams or lakes/reservoirs. This looks like it could be promising. https://www.google.com/maps/@40.9740606,-81.1092394,4104m/data=!3m1!1e3

Having used Google Earth extensively for this, I can tell you that it is hit and miss... mostly miss!
The problem with Google Earth is that a lot of the areas that you will search are at least a year old by the time they're posted. So what might look like a good spot may actually be dry (or completely underwater!).
When I first started, I didn't have Google Earth or even a GPS! All my searching was done with topographic maps, and hours of pouring over contours where lakes, streams, and creeks ran. And I had about the same level of success with that as I do with Google Earth!
The best method is to just get out there and search and search and search and search!

That looks like quite an interesting extensive area, although things may not be exposed early in the season, unless there is a drought. You also have to make certain that the areas are hidden, so you won't be seen.
This also looks promising:

Hi there!
I think I like the first one, but the problem is where can I park ? That area is like an hour or two away from my home. I wish I could buy the property on the left side so I can easily access to that area... LOL
Let me know of any other areas.
Thanks

Mud Mountain Dam on the white river always looks really rocky and didn't seem too promising. The park called Mud Mountain Dam is very high above the river too. There are a few places near highway 410 worth exploring about an hour south of Seattle.
