I mentioned on another thread, it depends on the scene. I like submergences much more if the victim either deserves it or goes under willingly. In a Damsel-in Distress scene, a rescue is still a rescue even if the victim has gone screaming under the mire first, or has been desperately struggling not to go under, gasping and choking. For me, the tension of "Will she get out, or not?" is exciting.

For me it depends on the pit. I dont much care for the coverage aspect of sinking, so emerging from clay doesn't do much for me ever. On the other hand, it works really well in peat if the story can make it make sense
