World Junior Hockey Championship

Postby kham » Wed Dec 28, 2016 3:23 am

It's Post-Boxing day, that means we are already late posting :D
Underway yesterday, they splitting sites between Toronto and Montreal

Not sure who came up with this schedule, but Canada played Russia in their opening game. 5-3 final for Canada, a not bad start . PP and forechecking excellent, defence ok, goaltending... not awesome. Needs tuning.
Game tonight underway against the Slovakia

5-0 Canada final. Slovakia was playing tight until the 2nd, when things started unravel. You cannot play pure keep-away in Junior at a skill level approaching Jedi  The shots were 44-6 Canada. If it wasn't for the goalie , it would have been not fun. Second goalie tonight for Canada, so instant self-made goalie thing now. Who plays next game?

Note that Russia rebounded by taking out their loss on Latvia 9-1 :P
And Finland, is off to an 0-2 start by losing to the Czechs and Dennmark of all teams.
USA is 1-0 , and plays Slovakia tonight. Then Russia on Thu as things get real
Canada's next game is Thu, against Latvia

The format of the IIHF rules is one of the things I continue to regard as distasteful; specifically, in tie-breaking situations, the number of goals scored in the tournament are considered. This, can lead to running up a score on opponents , especially the weaker ones. Which is not regarded as good hockey by any Canadian. About all you can do, is say that , it is what it is. And count the bottom line
Canada defeated Latvia 10-2 tonight in a laugher, which is best described as "there's a big difference between the Big Fish, and the Little Fish, in the tournament.." No shit sherlock? You make that up? I skipped watching with some flu bug needing rest, but the highlights were enough. Canada now waits for Saturday to play USA to determine first in their group

Semifinals Wed

Russia at USA 1500
Canada at Sweden 1930

Looks like Latvia and Finland play a couple times, in relegation, but that's worse than kissing your sister...

Losing in relegation is like.... hell, I can't think of something that bad :D
Actually, I can, but I'll refrain for now

The shootout game must have been torture for USA fans, for it went on and on... plus, it was a near thing. Russia almost won it.

Canada defeats Sweden 5-2, a game that was way closer than the score would suggest. Some smart coaching saved the day. By the assistants even. Heartbreak for Swedes. But someone has to lose.

Now
Canada V USA for the Gold
Russia v Sweden for Bronze
