It's Not Easy Being A Snoop: Part One

Postby Meeca » Wed Jan 04, 2012 8:53 am

Elise shakingly stifled the sobs ( or at least tried to ) that the thick knotted gag barely muffled.

She was being driven to God knows where by the two goons who'd kidnapped her and as much as she wanted to cry, scream and basically vent her frayed emotions, she didn't want to give the bastards the sadistic pleasure of seeing her in tears.

The car trunk she she'd been placed in was as you'd expect, dark and chilling and her shivering was mostly the early onset of hypothermia in the near sub-zero temperature.

She wished they had've allowed her to put her coat and gloves back on before they tied her up.

Her bare hands were numbed to the point that any further attempts to pick loose the knots on the rope binding her wrists was useless...She may as well been wearing welders gloves.

Her only hope she thought was if they were pulled over by the police she could alert them to her peril by grunting, " HELP ! " and tapping her bound feet as loud as possible, but that was a very forlorn hope indeed.

Several hours earlier... It'd been what Elise thought was a straight foward job of staking out one of the citie's less charming pieces of garbage.

Counsellor Leon McGilvray had lead a charmed life of being a long standing scumbag lawyer. You know, the type who'd find loopholes for clients he knew were guilty, but as long as the money was right and they were the kind who'd be useful as " friends in low places ", he was more than happy to ignore justice and the high morals that went with it.

That's what got Elise interested on his case.

She'd hated people who got by with corruption and knowing how to play the system unfairly since she was a kid in elementary school some twenty years ago and as an investigative journalist it was her duty to help shine the light on vermin such as he and his associates.

On a tip off from a reasonably reliable source, she'd staked out her quarry outside a diner on the less nice part of town for Leon to meet with some equally scummy friends he'd helped keep out of a well deserved jail sentence.

Nothing as vile as murder ( or worse ), but protection rackets with the occasional broken hand or knee wasn't exactly stealing candy from a baby stuff.

She sat hunched over in her " beloved " Honda Civic near freezing her ass off for two hours. Despite her long thermal skivvies, a cashmere turtleneck, and an argyle V-neck sweater layered under a woollen overcoat, she may as well been dressed for the beach.

Her efforts were finally rewarded when Leon arrived and entered the diner and was immediately met by one Gus Messino ( a local stand-over boss ) and another guy she didn't recognise.

" Time to move inside myself ", she muttered as she prepared to exit her car.

Just as she stepped onto the street two large men moved up to stand either side of her.

" Make a sound and you're dead ! ", one hissed as he revealed a silenced pistol he held under a folded newspaper.

" No sudden moves either, doll face ! ", the other added with an unfriendly smile.

Both arms were painfully gripped by the two and she was quietly walked around the corner to an awaiting black sedan.

Fear gripped her stomach as she desperately looked around for help, but there was none to be found.

To be continued...

The car's engine was running and another goon in a dark suit and sunglasses sat in the driver's seat. Elise was roughly shoved into the back seat in between the two who'd snatched her and without further ado they drove off.

" Wh-where are y-you taking me ? ", she stammered when she finally found her voice.

" You'll see soon enough ", the goon on her right replied gruffly. "...and shut your yap ", he added.

" P-please don't kill me ! ", she pleaded as tears brimmed her eyelids

" Shuddup ! ", the goon on her left said with a shove of his elbow in her side that silenced her.

They drove on for another few miles through the seedy part of town when they pulled into an underground garage.

Elise was pulled from the car and her coat and gloves roughly removed. Another went through the pockets of her jeans and patted her down like she'd seen police do.

" Time to get you ready for a ride in the country " one said with no emotion.

" No... Please let me go ! ", she sobbed as tears again brimmed her eyes.

One pulled two lengths of rope from his jacket and tied her wrists tightly behind her back and then bound her ankles.

" P-please... Y-you don't have to MMMPH ! ", her voice suddenly muffled as a knotted cloth was pulled deep into her mouth and tied behind her head.

" Pweeshh mmeff mm mmo ! ", she continued.

" Dames... Just shows they won't even shuddup with a gag in their talk hole ! ", one goon chuckled without mirth.

Elise continued pleading as she was picked up and placed in the sedans trunk and the lid closed.

She immediately began her attempt to loosen the ropes on her wrists as well as the gag as the car started up and moved on, but found the knots too tight to work with.

" No doubt I'm not the first person they've treated like this ", she thought as she continued to struggle.

" Please help me, God... Someone... Anyone ! ", she silently prayed as tears streaked her cheeks.

They drove on through the night going from city streets to the highway to was definately dirt country roads.

It was a three or four hour bumpy ride she'd suffered as her body had somewhat accustomed itself to the cold by then. Either that or hypothermia had moved her a bit closer to freezing to death.

Her hands too numb to continue struggling with the ropes, Elise had resigned herself to whatever the goons had in mind.

" I hope it's quick... Whatever it is they're going to do... ", she thought as she imagined one of them putting a bullet into the back of her head while she knelt in front of a shallow grave.

She tried mumbling a prayer even though she wasn't particularly religious, but desperate times call for well, you know...

Eventually the car slowed and stopped.

The trunk lid opened and Elise was roughly pulled out and while two held her, the third man bent down and released the rope binding her ankles.

She mumbled a weak plea which they ignored. New tears brimmed her eyes.

" Walk ! ", the man on her right grunted as she was lead through what looked like a forest.

Elise half walked, half shuffled as the cold and being bound so long took their toll.

The moonlight provided enough illumination for them to make their way as they walked for several minutes.

They came to a clearing before the goons stopped.

" Here we are, folks. "

Elise saw nothing but flat grassy ground in front of her.

She wondered if they were just going to shoot her and leave her laying out in the open, which seemed odd as most gangsters tended to try to conceal the body even if it was somewhere in the wilderness.

Without warning, the two holding her arms gave her a sudden violent shove forward.

Her muffled grunt of surprise quickly became one of terror as she plunged thigh deep into a thick muddy FREEZING morass five or six feet from where she had been standing.

The goons chuckled cruelly as Elise sank to her hips and she continuing shrieking through the gag.

She desperately tried to lean backwards towards the solid ground with her bound hands, but she was well short of reach.

Elise continued sinking up past her belly to her chest as the " men " behind her made jokes and lit cigarettes.

She sobbed as she sank to her shoulders and then a loud shot rang out, followed rapidly by two more.

She heard three heavy thuds to the ground and while her ears were still ringing, a voice chimed, " Well, kid... Yer in a spot of trouble, huh ? "

Elise continued to shiver and if it wasn't for the gag, her teeth would have chattered uncontrollably.

She made a muffled plea for help as a grizzled old man approached. She could make out what looked like an old automatic rifle she'd seen photos of Vietnam War soldiers carry. It was still smoking from the barrel in the chill night air.

Only her head and neck were visible by now.

" Pweaff 'elp mmm... ", she mumbled as she felt her body slip slightly deeper.

" OK, honey. Don't worry... I'll get yew out... somehow... ", he replied.

" I guess asking yew to reach out an' grab muh hand is a waste of time, huh ? ", he grinned grimly.

Elise nodded and gave a grunt in the affirmative.

" We better try somethin' else then. "

" Well, 'good thing the Corps taught me some sheet then ! "

He put the rifle down and walked away.

Elise panicked as she felt the quicksand touch her chin. She cried in anguish and more tears sprang as she sank up to her nose.

She'd given up just as the old man returned holding a broad wooden sheet. He quickly set it down behind her and then lying belly down he reached through the bog and grabbed her in a firm bear hug under her arms.

" Don't worry, kid... It's not your day to die ! ", he said as he began to pull her backwards.

Elise could feel the quicksand gradually loses its hold and with the man's strength, could feel herself being pulled free.

The man strained and grunted as he used his all to release Elise from its boggy grip.

With a sudden slurping sound, she was pulled out onto firm ground in a shaking sodden heap on top the man's lap.

" Hell and to think, I didn't need to buy you a drink ! ", he laughed.

Elise would have hugged him if her hands were unbound and if she wasn't too busy dying from hypothermia.

She could feel herself fainting as he worked the gag loose.

" 'Name's Ernie, young ma'am ! Pleased to make your acquaintance ! "

" Th-h-hank y-y-you... ", Elise managed before she passed out.

" Huh... Women usually have more to say than that ! ", Ernie smiled.
