Chat

Last night I did the transition from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on the computer I use for internet. This seems to have resolved one issue and perhaps created one issue with the use of chat.

For a long time, I have found myself automatically logged in to chat simply by logging in to quicksandfans. This issue has vanished as of this morning. I have no idea what caused it but its gone.

At the same time, the audible notification that is supposed to occur when someone "speaks" in the chat room seems to have broken. I have seen it break before, briefly, so its possible it has nothing to do with Windows 10 or with Edge, but it is a very useful feature when it works.

There is also an error message that pops up when the chat is opened, having to do with something not being supported. I didn't write it down when it happened but will try again and report what it was shortly.

The error is:

This site says...

TypeError: Object doesn';t support property or method 'create'

This would appear to indicate something amiss in the javascript code, I think.

I can now add that the problem of the audible signal appears to only occur when using the Edge browser. Maybe its a setting in that but in any case its resolved from my point of view.

Did Chat get removed with this new forum update?

Up to this point, yes.

Referring to his comments about it here viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13617 , he wants to see if the Shout Box function is satisfactory.

The original chat function was a significant customization. Kookus can speak to this with much greater detail, but I'm presuming that he would have to do it again from scratch with this particular software upgrade.

From my point of view the shoutbox is not a substitute for a chat because it is wide open to view by all rather than just to those who wish to join in. Many of those who do use chat, I am an exception to this and I know there aren't that many) like toi use a chat envirnment for things like role play, which would be inhibited by an audience of thousands.

These points are all well taken.

I haven't addressed the chat modification because I have not yet discussed it with Kookus. I think it's best if he comments on it here directly when he is able.
