I noticed at least two occasions yesterday when a small "1" appeared in front of the forum name at the window tab. The number corresponded, I suspect, to the number of unread messages, as is the case at gmail and also at quicksandland. But then I noticed times when there were new messages but no such indication. I would guess this means Kookus is experimenting with a new extention but perhaps that did not go well.

I hope it does go well and an extension of this type can be implemented. It would permit one to remain logged in but with the window minimized to the task bar and still be alerted to new messages.

It's my impression that the number corresponds to unread Notifications, not Messages (although it may be possible to configure this in the User Control Panel).

That could well be, although there is already a "notifications" label with a number after it, so it would be redundant to put it at the top.
