Tab/Other formatting characters?

Is there any way to get access to/add the capability to add a tab character code ([tab]) to the text fields? This would be a huge boon to storytelling, in that the formatting wouldn't be so consistently dense. I've tried to use spaces, but the forum automatically removes them when the post is made.
Along similar lines, it would be kind of nice to have access to other codes along the same lines, [center][/center] or [right][/right] for example.
