Looks more like she just fell into the hole that jet of water punched through the sand than actually sank in quicksand.

Seems like he should have let the water seep up into the sand, rather than blasting it up and out(maybe not seep, but a constant steady flow, enough to make the sand "quick," but not enough to make it look like a sand geyser). Wouldn't that make it more realistic, and cause her to sink deeper as well?

That's what i was thinking. If only they had made a "grill" of seeping water spouts covering the bottom evenly. Oh well, she was still hot to watch struggling!

I agree. In the few scenes I have done in sand, including the very similar segment done for the Weather Channel episode on quicksand, the most realistic approach has always been to adjust the water flow to lift the sand surface just a little so that water seeps out or bubbles out without producing a geyser. The show discussed here turned up the water pressure way too high. My own interpretation of it is they did not really do their homework and just rushed right into production.

The design flaw in that "quicksand" was the water outlet into the case. It was a single pipe pointed straight up under the model. The glass panel in the front is a silly mistake, all it shows is that the sand is dry at the side of the tank. All it will ever show, beyond the wet/dry status of the sand at the edge would be maybe a foot or knee if the person sinking happened to kick out against the side of the tank. (and there is little chance that would happen with dry sand there)
