No sinking here, but the photo and setting look pretty cool; along with the interesting description.

Good find. Ya know? That could explain why there are no more cave people; they all sunk. (my un-educated wild-ass-guess.) jk

Ooo, what a setting. Do a lot of caves have deep mud in them?

Only the really cool ones...
I'd be more worried about deep pools of bat guano... That is a problem, I understand, with some caves...

I was heavily involved in caving for about 15 years and would still go if it wasn't for the problem with white nose disease (a disease affecting bats). Caves are VERY muddy. I have encountered mud up to about waist deep but no deeper, though I am sure it can be found deeper. Unfortunately for those of us who like deep mud, cave are also rather cold (except for the really hot ones on volcanos or a few other places). Withn nearly all of continental USA the average temperature inside a cave, and therefore of any mud or water found there, will be between 57 and about 60 degrees.
In a volcanic cave one is very unlikely to find much mud at all since those caves tend to be much younger than limestone caves. All the hot caves I have been in were formed in an eruption in 1919. The only other kind of warm or hot cave I know about are so acidic (with sulfuric acid) the mud or water would burn unprotected skin.
