Wish to track Down a Story

Postby Fred588 » Fri Dec 16, 2016 4:49 pm

There is a story I vaguely recall from quite a while back that I would like to track down, particularly with respect to the title and author. The story involved a sort of chase; a woman being chased or tracked by a man. She runs into some quicksand and nearly goes under before he catches up and rescues her. Then it turns out its a game and he is her husband or boyfriend. I did a video with a similar theme a long time ago but its the story I want to find here.

I vaguely remember a few stories with that theme. It wasn't written by our very own Danger Girl, was it?

I don't recall. I very well might have the story on a hard drive somewhere but without some clue about author or title I have little chance of finding it among many hundreds of stories.

I have found two stories that have some similar elements, called The Pursuit Part 1 and The Pursuit, Part 2, both by Wayne Coulter. But while these MIGHT be the one I recall there are enough inconsistencies with my memory that I think not. In the story I remember it was not revealed to the reader to be a game until the end. It could be my memory that is faulty, of course.

I haven't written a story like that. Wayne's "The Pursuit" was similar to that plot line, but it was established up front that the two characters were friends, so there wouldn't have been that surprise husband/wife twist at the end. The plot Fred describes sounds familiar, but I can't for the life of me remember the exact story or the author.

I found a story that matches that description, but it does not appear to have either a title or an author listed on it. Is this the one?

Denise ran has hard as she could. Her bare feet pounded down the slight trail in the woods. Her light sarong wrap kept snagging on passing branches- it wasn’t really practical for sprinting through the woods, but that hadn’t been the idea earlier. She risked another hurried look back over her shoulder. Was he gaining on her? She wasn’t sure. Was there anybody else out here in the middle of nowhere? She couldn’t spare the breath to yell, and wasn’t sure how good an idea it would be to attract attention to her exact location, in case she had been lucky.

A ways back on the path, moving at a slow, easy trot, a good sized man was flicking quick glances at the ground ahead, and the branches to either side. The occasional imprint of a foot, threads caught on ends of branches- she was making this almost too easy. He didn’t consider himself an expert tracker, but this was something almost anyone could follow. He shook his head, savoring the pursuit- he knew these woods well, and had an idea where she was heading. If he was right, there was no real hurry.

She paused, bent over somewhat, fighting for breath. She knew she couldn’t let herself get too winded, not now. She had a ways to go yet, and he would just keep coming. Why hadn’t she paid more attention when Brian had been trying to teach her about hiking and navigating and such? She needed those skills now. She looked back the way she had come, and didn’t see anything... yet. Glancing ahead, she saw the path moving slightly uphill. “Great,” she thought, “it gets harder.” Then, she considered, and walked up the rise. Hoping for a slightly better view, she looked further ahead. The hill was a small one, and towards the bottom was a fork in the trail. One way went off to the right, and slightly up, and the other seemed to go down slightly. Hadn’t he told her something about following water to find people? Towns used to be built where there was water, a lot of them were still on streams and rivers and the like? Starting when she heard a sound behind her, she raced down the slight slope, and decided she needed to try something else- she couldn’t outrun her pursuer. She pulled off the sarong, revealing a black string bikini, and quickly hung the discarded wrap a small way in on the right hand fork, trying to make it look like it had snagged and pulled off. She then set off down the left trail, trying to pick up her speed again.

The man arrived at the rise a few moments later, studying the ground. She had stopped here, paced slightly, then moved off to the fork. He moved ahead, raising an eyebrow and a slight curl coming to his lips as he saw the sarong in the branches. He knew what else she had on, and seen that bikini before, when he was watching her. He had even been managed to be nearby when she bought it. He was about to move on to the right when something caught his eye. He looked back down again- there were a few sets of tracks here at the junction. After a few moments, he worked out what had happened. He shook his head, and thought “Nice try, but not good enough.” He plucked a strand of brown hair off a branch on the left hand fork, and began slowly moving along.

Denise slowed again after her burst of speed from the fork in the path. She was tired-- it seemed like she’d been running forever. Was he ever going to stop coming after her? Was he getting tired? Had she picked the wrong path? Thoughts tumbled madly through her head as she kept herself moving. “I can’t let him catch me. Not again.” she kept telling herself. She was starting to worry as the track she was following was becoming narrower and more over grown, but felt relief when she saw what looked like some kind of clearing ahead. Maybe she’d taken the right path after all!

He followed the trail, looking for more hints of her passage, but sure he was on the right track. He adjusted the cylindrical shape in his hand. Between it , and his pack, he should have everything that would be needed for when he caught up with her. Moving ahead, a smile tugged at his lips. He was looking forward to this. The hunt was fun, but the end of it...

She worked her way through the brush carefully. The bikini didn’t offer much protection from the branches. She was about through the denser undergrowth, and looking out over the clearing. She was almost there. Denise heard a noise behind her, and turned suddenly. She made it through the last of the branches, looking back the way she had come, but didn’t see him. She was sure it was him. She took a few more steps backward, and suddenly lurched to the right.
Glancing down, she saw her right leg was sinking into the ground. This was why it was so clear here! Fighting for balance, her left leg joined her right, miring her knee deep. She kept glancing back the way she had come, knowing he was close behind. What could she do?

He followed her prints, moving along. This trail wasn’t used often because of where it ended, or maybe he should say what it ended in. And Denise seemed to be moving straight towards the quicksand. He was impressed she had gotten this far, she was in better shape than he hand guessed. But it was almost over now.

She pulled on her legs, but only succeeded in driving them deeper. She was now up to her mid thighs. Suddenly, she heard a rustling in the bushes. He was here!!! She tugged again, squirming, and felt something give beneath her. She slid rapidly down to her groin in the muck, her gaze fixed back the way she had come. The bushes parted....

He moved through the last of the clinging vines, and looked ahead of him. There she was, not quite waist deep, and sinking. He let his eyes wander up and down her body, putting down his pack. She was staring back at him, her eyes wide, still apparently trying to get out, but only driving herself in deeper. Her lips parted, and she prepared to speak....

“Well it took you long enough, lover,” Denise purred, gazing at Brian, standing there, still holding the wine bottle in his hand. “I was wondering if you were going to miss the show.” She winked at him, a devilish smile on her lips, as she worked her way slowly deeper. Her bikini bottoms slid into the yielding sands as she reached around behind her neck, untying the strings of her top. She tossed it at him, and her hands began moving over her mostly bare, sinking body.

“God, you’re beautiful” he said, watching. She was both working herself down into the quicksand, and up into a frenzy. Just as her breasts touched the surface, her whole body shook explosively as she gasped. When she got her breath back, she saw he had opened the wine and poured two glasses, which he carefully put down. Just as the muck reached her shoulders, she pulled an arm out of the morass, and leaned forward. He pulled her out, slowly, and they hugged passionately, kissing each other deeply. She took her glass of wine, smiling at him, and said “I almost got away this time. Next time I will, and then you have to sink for me!”

He laughed, pulling out a blanket and spreading it over a small cleared area off to the right, which showed signs of having been used before. “Maybe. But you need to get better at hiding your tracks if you think that’s going to happen.” They embraced again, and he lay her down gently on the blanket. He kissed her, and felt her responding to him. This chase was the best game they had come up with yet. He was already looking forward to the next time, or the next idea one of them would come up with.

Yes, from all evidence I think it probably is. Do you (or anyone else) have any other clues as to its origin?

Sorry, no. I keep all of the headers on my story collection, so I was pretty surprised to see that this one didn't have any information on it. All I can tell you is that the date on the file is in October of 2006.

Thanks again. If anyone wants to try tracking this one down I would hazard the guess that a date of 2006 is much too recent. Computer file dates seem to change when they are copied from one pace to another. I would guess at something more like 1998 to 2000.
