My Friday, August 19'th Adventure, Continued, PART 3 (Click Here For Part 1 With More Pix):

I reached the side trail leading to the area on the north side of my pond, walked my bike to my usual drop-off point, and eagerly headed off to check out my sinking spot! :) When I got there, I was disappointed, but not surprised, to find that my sinking spot was totally carpeted with weeds, and under water! :x But then, the water was rather high, extending a ways further into the shoreline past my sinking spot, something that I would expect in early July or in October, when things become wetter. I blamed it on the wet July. :x In the photos of my sinking spot, there are white twigs stuck into the ground on the west, northwest, and southwest sides as a means to block cattle from falling in, since free-range cattle frequent the area in the late summer and early fall (some are there through the summer as well).

I checked out the patch of shallow clay/peat mud on the southwest end of the meadow, braving some stinging nettle plants to get into position to take some photos (you can see some of them in the first three photos), before heading back to my bike with itchy legs, taking a photo of another mucky spot, and another one of my weedy sinking spot along the way to my bike. So much for shooting a submergence sink among the weeds (in the video I wanted to try pulling myself out by pulling on the surrounding weeds, only to have them pull out by the roots). :(

My Friday, August 19'th Adventure, Continued, PART 4 (Click Here For Part 1 With More Pix):

2016 08 19 1P Crescent.JPG

It was still too cool to get in to mush up the weeds (while walking through the water in the grassy sedges, I found it to be frigid), so I headed to the road again, walked to the entrance, and took pix of the changes to the road as I headed up it (some which I shown earlier). Further up the road, I was disappointed to see that the water plantain that was growing in the middle of the road were gone. :( When I reached the south side of another boggy pond to the north, I noticed that the road was fixed up there, with a new culvert, and a pool that was between the beaver dam on the south side of the pond and the road was much lower than it used to be! I felt that it was worthy to investigate the boggy pond! :D

So, I headed further up the road, and down to the pond, which contains a sphagnum bog in a ring around a center pond, with an uneven ring of water surrounding it. I noticed that there was a larger sphagnum moss and other things "land bridge" between the west side and it, making it easy to access the center bog, which was generally solid peat with softer live moss on top, along with vegetation. I walked around, taking pix. I also shot a couple of quick videos of a couple of tiny patches of peaty mud as I made it bounce with my foot (posted here). There was a frog on one, which rode on top of the undulating quagmire. I also probed the mud, finding it to be mostly shallow (less than knee deep, up to waist deep), although one spot (where I shot one quaking video) was around shoulder deep, but was likely floating on water.

I can picture the frog staring at the head of a damsel sinking to her doom!

One more pic from the pond north of my Crescent Road pond:

I returned to the road, and continued to follow it, taking pictures along the way, reaching the clearcut! :D I was glad to see that the logging was long finished, and perhaps this road would remain quiet from now on! :D I took some pix of the clearcut, and also probed some mud along the road, which was clay which quaked when I agitated it with my feet, but it was all choked with rocks and wood, and was only around a foot deep at most. There were lots of deep cattle tracks in the road, made when the road itself was softer.

I then returned back to my bike at my pond, had lunch and a bathroom break, and was finally ready to begin playing in the mud for the first time in two years! :D I took a photo of the view of the road from my sinking spot. You can make out glimpses of the embankment behind the road in the distance.

2016 08 19 1ZC Crescent.JPG

After stripping among some alders west of my sinking spot, I first decided to head to the shallow clay/peat patch on the southwest end of the meadow, and had a stimulating ;) wallow there, before cleaning up my upper front of my body in the tinier pond there and heading back to my main sinking spot, happy that I didn't hurt myself. So far, so good! :) Then, I got down to business! Taking a closer look at the vegetation that had taken over my sinking spot, I was happy to see that it was a plant called Bur Reed, a plant that always seemed to like colonizing soft, muddy areas, and was rather soft and easy to eliminate, without creating heavy matted roots. It did have some spherical prickly seedheads on it, but they were no problem. The water was cold, but I did get used to it. The bur reeds were quite easy to mush up, and I managed to get around 2/3'rds of my sinking spot reclaimed before painful leg cramps forced me to quit. :x And, painful they were! :o  I found it painful to walk, so I laid down, and my legs were still in pain! :o I found more comfort laying on my side, and eventually I sat up, and watched my left calf pulsating, as it something was inside of it, and was trying to break out! It took some time, but the pain eased and I began to feel better. I attempted to try and do some more, but had to stop right away. So, I cleaned up, air-dried myself, got dressed, and returned to my bike.

My Friday, August 19'th Adventure, Continued, PART 7 (Click Here For Part 1 With More Pix):

I put on a hoodie for extra warmth, and then walked back up the road to the pond to the north, where I walked along its eastern and northern shoreline this time, taking pictures of the patches of mud there and probing them with sticks to check their depth, which ranged from a few inches to around waist deep, or perhaps deeper. There was some nice deep mud below the beaver dam in the pool of water that had lowered from the fixed-up road and new culvert, but it was close to the road, in full view (actually much of the pond further back is in view of the road). :( There were some interesting areas of exposed mud on the north end, and I wanted to test it out in the future, since I couldn't reach some areas further out with my stick. Once I finished going around the north end, I headed back to the road, and returned to my bike and pond, feeling all warmed up and sweaty. I had really went all out with the photos, because there were so many muddy patches that looked interesting:

My Friday, August 19'th Adventure, Continued, PART 10 (Click Here For Part 1 With More Pix):

2016 08 19 1ZT Pond North Of Crescent.JPG

All nice and warm again, I returned to the sinking spot, and got back in to finish the last 1/3'rd of it on the east side, taking a moment to adjust to the cool mud/water. After I got the weeds mushed, I went over the entire area again, to try pushing them down deeper. I noticed that while doing the work, there was lots of swamp gas bubbling up, but it was a shame that it was bubbling up through the one or two inches of water instead of farting out of pure mud. However, during my second round, there were some small patches of mud rising to the surface around the center as I worked there. It seemed that I displaced just enough mud to allow some of it to just barely expand to the surface. :) I paused in the center, with a little bit of mud on the surface in front of me, feeling it slowly give way beneath my feet, feeling myself sink ever so slowly. I moved my feet slightly, and could feel the hungry mire slowly sucking me down deeper, making me feel a bit stimulated, but only slightly, since I was still surrounded by water, and didn't feel like getting my shoulders and upper back muddy at this time. I did have the problem that due to the looseness of the mud from the water on the surface, some weeds would float back up again when the mud was disturbed. I did my best to try and keep as much of them down as I could. I also tried to catch a frog that was in the water, for fear that it might get accidentally mushed into the ground with the weeds. But, it got away. I did as much as I felt I needed to, got out, cleaned up, dried off and got dressed. I also had to detach some leeches that were making a meal of my blood. I was also happy to see that I had no leg cramps this time. :)

Two more photos of my sinking spot reclaimed from the invading weeds:

2016 08 19 1ZU Crescent.JPG

2016 08 19 1ZV Crescent.JPG

So, my sinking spot has been restored to a watery mucky patch, with still a few fragments of weeds poking up. I was glad that the majority of it was soft bur reed, with only a tiny bit of tougher grassy sedges, which were a bit more work to mush up, since they had tough runners that I had to snap. I returned to my bike, and headed out, periodically checking the I-Phone for service, snacking on some nut bars, and finally getting phone service partways down the hill, my dad picking me up in the valley.

Overall, this was a very productive and revealing outing, even though I never had any submergence sinks or actual sinking videos. But, at least I re-opened up my sinking spot, and also had the experience of standing, suspended around chest deep in bottomless quagmire, even though it did have some water on top of it! :D All the wondering and worrying about the area have been put to rest, and I feel like a gigantic weight has been lifted off of me! :D Aside from the soreness from my leg cramps, my other injuries were never really a problem! :D But, my shoulders did feel a bit more sore, as well as my abdomen (playing in deep mud always does that), and my hands and arms felt a bit sensitive (just typing this report out two days later, Sunday night, was making my left wrist and forearm very sore until I stopped typing, when it felt better again). But, after my sorenesses settled down, I was getting a bit concerned about some pain in my lower abdominal muscles, especially on my lower right! I hoped that I didn't strain something doing my weed mushing in my sinking spot (I hadn't done that in almost two years, and previously the weeds were nowhere near as bad)! :? I hoped that it would not be an issue for any future adventures! :?

However, in addition to juggling various sensitivities in various parts of my body, as well as my cataracts making things more blurry, and some patches and spots in my eyes that my optometrist and retinal specialist can't figure out, I have a new problem to worry about! :x I had a small rough area on the back of my neck for years, which very slowly got larger, and would swell up and then dry up over and over again. Several years ago, my previous family doctor thought it was nothing. But, he retired, and recently, my newer family doctor took a biopsy of that and of a red patch on my right forearm. The day before my adventure, I saw my doctor, who told me that the red patch on my arm was nothing to worry about, but the area on the back of my neck, was SKIN CANCER!!!!!! :o  It is a common form of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma, and generally doesn't spread. So, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, my mom has to apply Imiquimod cream to the area before I go to bed (I can't apply it myself, since it is on the back of my neck), which calls my body's defenses to that area to fight the cancer (immunotherapy). I have to get that treatment until winter, and hopefully, the cancer will be gone by Christmas! :) But, because my mom has to look at the back of my neck, I was concerned about any submergences I might do in future adventures (if I get the chance to do it at all), which might leave mud residue that I might miss, but my mom might discover! So, I don't know if I would do any submerging, even if the opportunity comes up, although using a swim cap could keep my hair clean. :?

Next, I needed to do a follow-up outing, and hoped that the water level would drop, and/or the mud would rise, so that I could push the weeds down deeper, without having them try to float back up to the top. I was concerned about some rain in the forecast, which could cause a setback in terms of dropping water levels. But, at least I finally ended my extended "drought" in terms of my adventures, and hoped that I could finally start going with some regularity :) , weather permitting, of course. :?

My Friday, August 26'th Adventure, PART 1:

One week after having my long-awaited first adventure since September 2014, I had my second adventure on Friday, August 26'th! :D It had taken half a week for the soreness to go away from the leg cramps from straining against the cold mud during my bog reclamation work (and perhaps also from some horizontal struggling in shallow thick/stiff clay). However, while the soreness in most of my abdominal muscles went away (moving about in the deep mud and pulling myself towards the edge of the sinking spot really gave those muscles a workout, not to mention pushing under all those weeds), the lower abdominal muscles, especially on my right side, were getting even more sore later in the week! I hoped that it would not interfere with my sinking. :? It was going to be a nice warm day, but with increasing cloud in the afternoon, with cooler showerier weather after that. :? So, I had to take advantage of the warm weather while I could! :)

My dad dropped me off a little further up Crescent Road, where I packed my things in my saddlebags, and he gave my his I-Phone again. I was happy to see that I wasn't getting any dizzy spells this time (all the anxiety was released on the previous week's adventure). :) I couldn't wait to see what my sinking spot was like this time, especially since I had mushed up all the invading vegetation in the area! So, there was no intertangled network of roots to hold the mud down, and no additional weight from the plants themselves to hold the mud down! :D Also, we managed to get by with only a very light shower between adventures, so the water levels should have been steadily dropping! :D Then, since the weeds were simply pushed under the surface, they would add to the bulk of the mud, and also slowly be digested by the bog, bloating it with swamp gas that would further make the mud rise! :D I couldn't wait to see the anticipated results! :D

I headed straight to my Crescent Road pond, hoping that I could perhaps finally shoot my first submergence sink since 2014, once things warmed up later in the day! :) I also wanted to try pushing the weeds deeper beneath the surface, since some of them were wanting to float back up to the surface because of so much water and loose mud. Pushing them under in thicker mud would make them stay down better! After I parked my bike in the usual spot north of the pond, I headed straight to my sinking spot. When I got there, I was disappointed to see that it was still a large patch of water, with some torn green leaves floating on the surface. :( It looked like the water level hadn't dropped at all, and nothing I had done allowed the mud to rise/expand to the surface. :( I was debating whether or not to do the follow-up deeper dunking of the weeds, but if I did, it would be later in the day, when it warmed up more. :?

2016 08 26 2A Crescent.JPG

So, for my sinking needs, I decided to perhaps try out the mud in the pond with the sphagnum bog ring in the center further up north, perhaps even shooting a submergence sink in a deeper spot. But first, since it was still early in the day and cool, I dropped my bike on a side-trail northwest of that north pond, and headed down the cattle trails through the woods to the meadows to the north, to check on the floating bog there to see what it was like.

When I reached the meadow with the bog, I was disappointed to see that around the boggy area, the water level was higher there too, with very little mud exposed. :( So, it seemed that the wet July had taken its toll on a number of places. :( I did take some pix of what little mud I saw there:

2016 08 26 2B Meadow North Of Crescent.JPG

2016 08 26 2C Meadow North Of Crescent.JPG

I then headed to another meadow to the east that I knew had some shallow but fine loam muck, which might be interesting. But, while it was all exposed and full of cattle tracks, I didn't feel like trying to mush it up for a wallow which may or may not work, and then have to go all the way back to the floating bog to clean up. :? So, I headed back to the other meadow, taking pix of some flowers in the bushes (an attractive pink Pyrola and a bog orchid whose flowers were turning brown) in the bushes between the meadows along the way.

2016 08 26 2D Pink Pyrola East Of Meadow N Of Crescent.JPG

2016 08 26 2E Bog Orchid East Of Meadow N Of Crescent.JPG

I then walked to the north end of the meadow to the wet area there (seasonal pond), which was mucky too, but not really of interest. I then followed the west side of the meadow, going briefly into a southwesterly branch of the marshy area choked with willows before going back to the meadow, returning to the south end, where I headed back down the trails back to my bike.

My Friday, August 26'th Adventure, Continued, PART 2:

I returned to the Crescent Road pond, where I dropped my bike off north of the pond, and then had lunch. I then decided to try and do the follow-up mushing of the weeds after all! :) Near the area, I stripped, and wrapped and tied a plastic bag around my neck to cover up my sun-sensitive "Imiquimod cream"-treated skin cancer. Initially, I planned on doing some limited work from the edge. But, once I got in, I began to go further out and tried to do most of the mushing within arm's reach of the surrounding vegetation, so that I could limit how deep I sank, since I was a little leery of getting muddy too high up my chest, since the water and mud was cool, and the air, while fairly warm, wasn't as warm as I would have liked. But, once I got into it, I found myself moving closer to the middle (I had been getting accustomed to the temperature), with nothing within reach to keep me from sinking deeper, although I was able to push down on some previously buried/submerged clumps of vegetation, which helped give me some support. However, I was finding that as I pushed stuff down, other plants would then float back up towards the surface because the surface water mixed down into the mud where I pushed them under, made the mud covering them waterier, making me wonder if I was making any difference with my work. :? Once again, swamp gas was occasionally bubbling up through the mud/water as it was disturbed.

Since I had gotten in, I noticed that each time I had moved myself around through the mud, or especially tried pulling myself towards the shoreline, my lower stomach muscles would hurt worse! :x I hoped that I wasn't getting/worsening a new injury, which would make it too painful to do any mudplay at all in the future! But, while I was in the center of the patch, I did notice something encouraging. :) Last time I was in there, the mud I displaced resulted in a few inches of mud rising to the surface in front of my chest. This time, the mud I displaced resulted in a foot or so of mud rising to the surface, but just barely, with some water washing over it on and off! :D So, the water level had indeed dropped! :D But still, it would probably take a few weeks of sunny hot weather to make the mud fully exposed, and colder air masses were starting to move down from the north with alarming regularity! But anyways, I did my best to get things pushed under, and after I got out, it looked like there was less green than there was before I had started this follow-up mushing! :) I cleaned up, air-dried, got dressed, gathered my things, and returned to my bike.

2016 08 26 2F Crescent.JPG

Since I was on the cool side from being lower chest deep in the mud and water, not to mention the evaporation from drying off, I had to kill time before trying out the mud in the pond further to the north. So, I decided to revisit a meadow with a shallow pond further to the west, which I had visited once before, back in 2013. Last time, there was water on the south end, and perhaps along the east side, with the ground soft along the north side of the water. So, I biked back to Crescent Road, and headed further up the road, until I recognized the correct sideroad on the north side of Crescent Road, since I remembered that it coincided with another sideroad that was on the south side, which led to more meadows to the southwest. I had to walk my bike northward up the sideroad, since it was going up a fairly steep hill, finding that it was really playing me out, giving me the most exercise I had in a long time! :) I parked my bike near some trees in an open area, followed a marshy streambed through the woods northward, and reached the meadow. The meadow had no water left in it at all. There was mud, but I couldn't probe the center, where it would be most worthwhile, since I couldn't get too close to it without getting my shoes muddy. It was full of cattle tracks further away. It wasn't a place with really deep mud, but perhaps enough to mush up for a decent shallow wallow. :? But, with no water for cleanup, playing in this area was out of the question. :( Besides, I had a better place with mud and cleanup to get to, and I was all nice and warm again! :) As I started back through the woods, I decided to turn around and return to that spot to take a picture of some of the mud:

2016 08 26 2G Meadow West Of Crescent.JPG

I returned to my bike and headed back, stopping at a pond beside Crescent Road to take a couple of pictures of the mud there (something I have been doing in previous outings), before continuing on back to my sideroad.

2016 08 26 2H Pond South Of Crescent.JPG

2016 08 26 2I Pond South Of Crescent.JPG

I passed my Crescent Road pond, and parked my bike on the trail northwest of the north pond. Since I wasn't certain whether I was going to try shooting a video there or not, I gathered everything just in case - refreshment, camera, Gorillapod and my junk shorts. I also took my swim goggles and swim cap, because I wanted to keep my eyes and hair clean, since the weather was just marginal for total coverage, and since my mom needed to rub more of that Imiquimod cream on my tumor that evening, I couldn't have a single particle/smear of mud stuck around the area!

I then headed to the pond, set things down by a tree on the northwestern part of the surrounding meadow, and removed my lower clothes for checking things out, because it would save me the trouble of having to clean my muddy legs/feet off before undressing afterwards. I then headed out to probe the mud to find the deep spots using the same stick I used last time. Because the high thin clouds had finally thickened enough to make things overcast, I didn't need to keep my neck covered. I focused on the northern part of the pond, since the more southerly areas were closer to the road where it crossed the stream leaving the area, and would be more visible from there.

Overall, I found it to be mostly shallow, perhaps knee to thigh deep, and perhaps hip deep. But, I encountered a few spots that were shoulder deep, which was encouraging! :D I spotted a hornet's nest in one spot, so I stayed away from that. After exploring the northwest, north and northeast parts, I tried to go over things again, trying to find the shoulder deep area that looked most promising, but failed to positively identify it. :? I also wanted to find that hornet's nest, because I had thought about taking a picture or video of it (from a safe distance), to be possibly used as a lead-in for a future video. But, I didn't find it again (unless it was just a piece of wood sticking up :? ). :(

I then decided to strip the rest of my clothes and probe the areas with my body, to get a "feel" of the area, to find the really soft spots that would be worthy of using for video. I found the mud to be soft, loose, bubbling peat on the surface, ranging from a few inches to a couple of feet, with stiffer peat underneath that, which I could work my legs deeper into. The stiffer peat had some depressions, which was where I could work myself down deeper. Most of the time, the best I could do was work myself to the top of my legs, or to crotch deep. :( I could have worked myself deeper, but because of my knee sensitivity, I didn't want to take any chances with stressing them out. :? It looked like it was easier to push a stick down to shoulder depth than it was to push my feet and legs. :? So, I gave up on shooting a video :( , and instead crawled around in the mud all over the north area, until I finally found a spot to have a stimulating horizontal struggle to end things for the day. :) During my slogging through the mud, I did try out the soft spots in that bog "ring" where I had shot the quaking bog videos last time, and found them to be watery underneath, just like I had expected.

All done for the day, I headed onto the sphagnum bog "ring" around the center pond, and cleaned up on the edge of the center pond, finding that the deeper water of the center pond seemed warmer than that in the shallower Crescent Road pond. I air-dried, got dressed, and it was already around 5 pm. I never took any photos of the area, since I had done so extensively the previous time, and now the mud was all disturbed with trails by my activities, and it was getting too late anyways.

I returned to my bike, put my things away, and headed back to Crescent Road, coasted down into the valley, and this time, because I was feeling stronger, I was going a little bit faster, and actually met my dad on the highway instead of Learmouth Road.

It turned out that my dad had been delayed because of a police investigation of a suspected arson fire on the hillside a few houses south from our place! There had been two suspicious fires several blocks away to the northeast two days earlier, then this one several houses away on this day, and then another blaze started up near Predator Ridge golf course further away down the valley to the southwest the following day! There have been many suspicious fires around the Vernon area since early this spring! The next day, I took a look at the nearby fire site, and there was scorched grass alongside the road, leading a little ways up the hillside.

I was disappointed that the pond to the north didn't pan out in terms of something for a dramatic sinking video. :( But then, I later realized that perhaps I could have shot a video of myself slogging through it. :? I have thought about picking out a spot, and working it over and over again to soften the stiffer peat to a deeper depth, but I don't know if that area would stay exposed, or not. :? Also, while it is on the opposite end of the pond, it is still in view of the road crossing the south end. I am reasonably satisfied with my follow-up weed mushing in my sinking spot, since it looked like there are less weeds showing than before, and some mud was even poking up to the surface after I got out! :) I wished that I could have mixed the water down into the mud, and the mud up into the water to eliminate all the water, and make the mud all exposed and loose, but it would have brought back up all the weeds I had pushed under, forcing me to have to push them all back under again. :?

I was happy that I never had leg cramps, so my legs were feeling better (perhaps not playing in the cold stiff clay further south helped). :) I woke up the following morning, noticing that my tennis elbow seemed to have returned to my right arm after being better for over a year :x , but later in the day, it seemed to settle a bit, and vanished the day after, although it seemed to come back very slightly and then disappear again on and off since. :? However, my lower abdominal muscles were then sore all the way across, not just on the right side! :x I hoped it would go away soon, but it didn't. :( I found that when I laid down or sat up in bed, I had to support myself by holding onto my thighs, otherwise I would get worse tearing pain across my lower abdomen, below my belly button, and I would remain uncomfortable for hours or days after! :x Then, I found that it hurt to push too hard to pee or shit, although after a few weeks, I was slowly seeing improvement (with no more pain taking a dump). My doctor checked me out and ruled out a hernia, but he ordered blood and urine tests, which came back normal. Hopefully, by next season, I will have recovered and strengthened my stomach muscles to avoid this problem altogether, and will be able to struggle in the mud, and lift myself in and out without problem. :?

I am not fully certain, but it appears as though the water level in the pond is slowly creeping up year after year, which makes it increasingly necessary to keep adding mud to my sinking spot to keep it exposed. :? I think that particular next job, adding more mud to my sinking spot, would be easier when the sun is cooking the water next May, June, or early July instead of now, when the water is feeling so frigid due to our seasonal cooling. :? Because of my lower abdominal muscle pain (still bothering me as of October 1'st), I decided that it wasn't a good idea to go on any more adventures this year anyways, forcing me to pass up on three more opportunities between late August and late September. :( Also, it is now HUNTING SEASON, so there is an elevated risk of being seen by people with LIVE FIREARMS driving up and down that sideroad, especially since it is a little bit more visible, although a line of trees between my pond and the east pond seem to be getting larger. :? And, my skin cancer on the back of my neck should be gone by Christmas, with no more treatments by next spring, and my abdominal muscles will be in better shape. 8-) So, my 2016 season (Aug 19'th, Aug 26'th) has ended for the year, starting and finishing before my 2014 season (Aug 27'th, Sept 7'th, Sept 16'th) even began! I am now keeping my fingers crossed for a much better 2017 season!
