Indoor quicksand ideas?

Does anyone have any ideas for making an indoor quicksand pit similar to what Jumpoff Joe uses? Other then cutting a gaping hole in the floor. Lol

Well I HAVE an indoor pit but was certainly NOT inexpensive.

A good deal will, obviously, depend on what you actually want, but if that is anything involving real mud of any kind and deep enough to be called quicksand then you are going to have two major problems to deal with. The biggest one is going to be the weight. A cubic yard of water, which is hardly enough to make anything deep enough weights approximately 225 pounds and anything with any form of mud in it will be substantially heavier. Another issue will be the potential mess. If you use any kind of real mud it will get all over the pace no matter how careful you are. A third problem will be keeping it warm enough to be comfortable.

All these can be overcome but when you add "inexpensive" you may be crossing the line of possibility.

if you have a warehouse or garage with a concrete floor it makes things much easier. You can build a stage on top of that and have your "tank" resting on the floor. You will need enough area and a high enough ceiling to make it work properly. All the physics that Fred mentioned will still apply and I would emphasize the mess aspect. You'd be amazed at how much cleanup goes into anything relative to this. Don't forget sufficient lighting and environmental control as required. Performers get really testy long before they start turning blue. And drains. Don't forget drains.

Sure....build your house so it juts out over an area of quicksand, then make sure to leave the floor out for the room that juts out over the quicksand. You can even include a small platform with a water hose so you can clean yourself off before you’ve got to enter the rest of the house. Place a TV up on the ceiling for watching during those relaxing horizontal sinks we often enjoy as our skin soaks up the minerals, etc., so we can maintain our youth longer.

When I say the indoor pit here was not inexpensive, here is a bit more about what I meant.

First, the building itself was built for the purpose. Its a 768 square foot workshop or barn, intentionally constructed with no windows, so lighting can be controlled totally. It was built with a ten-foot ceiling and a foot-thick concrete slab. Toward one end I had the contractor dig a hole as deep as he could get (which was about 3.5 feet) before the slab was poured. Later this was dug out by hand to about 5 feet. After that I hired another contractor to build a form inside the hole and pour more concrete to make a 7 by 8 foot indoor pool. Total cost to this point $32,000.00. After fully testing the pool for water-tightness, a heating system was added. Figure $500.00 for that. Then the mud media, which is synthetic, was added and the jungle set built around three sides.

The building itself was used for several seasons as a bunkhouse for models, before the main house was expanded in 2015, and half of it is used as the wardrobe room now. The pit is used from September through May when models can be booked. It is also used for photoshoots where the client is paying.

I can think of a lot of things to do with $32,000, but building an indoor quicksand pit somehow didn’t make the list. Especially if it’s only 5’ deep. That’s because I’m over 5’ tall. Okay...barely. But I’ll take those 3 extra inches. So my pit would have to be at least 7 ‘ deep, so I could just reach the top with my outstretched fingers if I sank to the bottom. Anyhow, with so much free quicksand around here that I can go play in for just the cost of fuel, I’ll skip on the pit. No doubt though, I have absolutely no doubt that it’s fun to play in.

maybe use a heating system that uses and circulates hot water to warm up a indoor clay pit or building a greenhouse around an inground swimming pool and then add a heating system in the pool if it doesn't have one built in already then fill it with what you want to sink in but again whatever option you chose you will have to deal with huge costs and space

designing plans and building your own indoor pit to your own spending budget and to your own design will be the fun part

Well, bear in mind that while it can be used for recreation the pit here was constructed as a film set.

Yeah, I knew that Fred. And I know it takes money to make money. But that’s a lot of videos that need to be sold just to pay for the quicksand pit. You all had invited a friend of mine to help you all out on the set before. He said that he had had a really good time. You may remember him. < unauthorized publishing of personal information removed > He used to come over here to go sinking with me in our tidal creeks as well. He was impressed with your operation. He also enjoyed your mud pits. So, do you producers ever take the time to enjoy your creations by relaxing in your mud pits, or do you leave those strictly for the girls???

I’ve got a tidal mud creek that’s right behind my house, but the mud is only, at best, waste deep. I generally don’t even ~ And it’s got a bunch of limbs and other crap mixed in with it. When we have even the slightest bit of rain water ends up sitting on the top. Plus it’s in a rather snaky area, so although I try to keep the area all cleaned out, it’s not a place that’s worth sinking even the slightest bit in, especially when there’s so many terrific places that are just a 5-10 minute drive (or bike ride) away. Those places are pure heaven. They’ve got mud that’s seamlessly completely bottomless with silky smooth mud that, if it was a food item, would most resemble Peter Pan Smooth Peanut Butter.
