Second sink

Postby Andybarned » Mon Jun 01, 2020 1:53 am

Wowser. What an evening!!

Firstly thank you for all your words of advice encouragement.

Last night I went back to the quarry and with more confidence managed to sink to my chest. The pit was a little dryer than before so managed to get to the middle and really wallow about. Try as I may I couldn’t get much deeper ~ I’m guessing that’s natural buoyancy holding me there?

Luckily the video turned out great to ~ even if I did manage to get my tripod covered in mud

What an amazing community you all are and thanks for helping me explore this part of me with!

Congrats!
Basically you're right about that bouyancy. The drier the substance is you're sinking into, the more heavy it is .You (as a human) are roughly the same weight as water. Mud (especially the clayish stuff) is much more dense. Lets say it has the double density, then your body is only able to sink half into it, and that should roughly be the chest/belly level you experienced.
There are other factors, too and of course there are tricks that allow to sink (much!) deeper. Don't try to sink all the way at once and just do it step by step. Being not able to get back up in time is entirely possible!

Bogbud is correct in his assertions about half way AND chest deep even though that might appear to be contradictory. "Half way" here refers to half of one's total mass, not of one's height. The human body is not uniform in its density. The large bone are the heaviest (most dense)and the lungs the lightest (least dense).

I remember going sinking for the first time and being totally disappointed when I didn't just get sucked under. Damn you buoyancy!

You're pretty safe sinking in a spot like this. I've been borrowing my local quarry's settling pond for more years than I'd like to admit and honestly I worry more about cutting my feet on a rock and/or getting caught than I do about getting stuck or drowning. Just don't anything crazy like weighing yourself down or jumping in headfirst until you're sure you understand the risks and how to mitigate them. 8-)
