I just bought a new pair of socks this week: over-the-calf, thin cotton, greenish yellow with a fine mesh pattern on them. Perfect for a peril scene where I get lured into a swamp or quicksand and feel my fancy socks going down in the mire.

What is the name of the thin "socks" that are worn with stilettos? The ones I am thinking of have the frilly part turned down and are short, like anklett, and may be sheer or thick. I am also thinking of a girl wearing a poodle skirt from the '50s and '60s.

I sometimes think of the knee high socks from 1970's gym class; good and bad memories. But that is another story.
