The scenario is a personal favourite too. Remote beach, flat unsuspecting sand. No obvious signs. The victim suddenly sinks, finding themselves surrounded by nothing but quicksand! Low chance of someone passing by, nothing to grab onto -- and often not much to take off either!

You could sell me on that... :D

I like mud that is smooth, thick and gooey, like clay or really thick peat. I like the viscous (not vicious) characteristic: not stuck fast, but having to struggle hard to work your way in/out. There's three great feelings: firstly, the way the ground yields - the 'support' gives out when you try to escape, and you sink further - how deep?!! Second, the drag of the mud that moves with you when you struggle. Thirdly, the embrace as the mud surrounds you, deeper and deeper. But being totally stuck or locked solid wouldn't be fun for me at all. So most sand is out - usually too difficult to sink into, and locks solid so can't move. It would be cool if quicksand stayed quick.

For me, the best mud is usually a mixture: around here, natural clay deposits tend to be too sticky (e.g. get totally stuck just shin deep), while watery peat is not really viscous, and sand (if sinkable) tends to collapse once disturbed. I found some nice mud that was mostly decomposed tree needles, with some clay and very little sand.

my favorite type has to be very thick, very heavy, creamy clay. actually, it doesn't even have to be that perfect, silky smooth, clean clay; i dont mind if it's a little earthy and dirty. just as long as there's no sticks, rocks or twigs in it, gotta be soft and deep enough for at least half of me to be pulled down and swallowed up... sounds good to me :D
