Going in supercharged tidal mud usually eliminates that buoyancy issue. That’s because the salt in the water has the effect of making clay and silt far, FAR stickier. It can become so sticky that it creates a really strong seal against your skin, which in turn, magnifies the amount of suction created significantly. When the downward force created by the suction becomes stronger than your body’s upward force created by your buoyancy, your buoyancy point is eliminated and is no longer a factor. In these conditions, its actually possible for your body to sink completely under, resulting in the typical “Hollywood quicksand death scene” to actually take place. Of course, it would literally take hours and hours as you continued to sink at a ridiculously SLOW rate, because in order to create such a strong suction, the quicksand tends to have a high clay content and is somewhat thick. There’s plenty of areas like that around here, so going under is relatively easy without “popping back up.” Just keep in mind that if you’re heavier than the quicksand your body has displaced, you’ll continue to slowly sink down deeper and deeper. When the mud covers over the end of your air tube, you might find yourself completely fucked if you can’t get yourself back up to the surface. A few million years from now, some far distant relative of mankind might uncover your fossil and put you in some far distant future history museum as a display about mankind’s early civilization, referred to as the “texting age.”

For everybody. How deep you can go under the mud in this way ? What is your deepest ?

I use a trunk or a plank to go deeper. This plank follow me in the mud durring the sinking. In this way, i can push on the bottom of the plank to go deeper easily.

I try to go as deep as i can under the mud but idk what do i use to breath the easyliest under ? What is the better tool to breath under ?

I'm currently use this mask. I can keep my face clean but i cannot go really deeper...
I know some people use a pipe, but it is risky if you cannot keep the pipe in the mouth under the mud...
Please to give me your advices.

Do not go sinking without a partner.

i use a washing machine wastewater hose that i brought from a hardware store,. its just the right size,. doesn't kink or compress,. is corrugated and has a flange on the end which makes it easy to hold in my mouth,. as for what type of mud - sediment type mud such as tidal estuaries or quarry mud is very difficult to submerge fully in as your very buoyant in it, if you do manage to get under with your breathing aid it is extremely difficult to breathe as the mud is so dense and heavy that it exerts so much pressure on the chest it prevents you expanding your lungs to breathe effectively,.. the problem is less in organic type mud such as peat bogs as this mud is less dense and easier to submerge in, however your still limited in depth as the deeper you go the harder it becomes to expand your chest to inhale - my limit in quarry mud is just a few inches below and i struggle to suck in enough air to breathe,. however in peat bog i can go much deeper, standing vertically and reaching up with just the tips of my fingers breaking the surface so id say 2 feet of muck above my head - any deeper than that and breathing becomes almost impossible without compressed air and a dive regulator - remember to inhale through your hose and exhale through your nose, this prevents you rebreathing your second-hand air that's inside your hose and also stops the muck from working its way up your nose

and last of all,. film your sinks, even with your camera phone - were desperate for decent male sinking material,. so wear a mask,. take your camera and document your fun if you can as lots of us that cant would love to share your adventures

I have experience with only two instances involving breathing through any sort of device while submerged. Neither instance required sinking particularly deep, and both took place in the Studio clay pit.

In the first instance it was me breathing through a skin diver's snorkel. I had to submerge so as to be out of view of the camera, except for my hand and part of my arm, so I had to extend my upper arm perpendicular to the camera's view, submerge my head, and hold the snorkel to the side opposite my arm. At the same time I had to reach blindly and grab the model's ankle as if to pull her in. She had to raise and extend backward her leg. The director then said cut so I could get out of the way to let the model finish the scene.

The second instance involved four graduate students making a very avant garde film. At various times one, two, three, or all four of them were in the pit with wigs over their faces and very slowly surfacing, turning a bit to one side or the other and resubmerging. Each had a sort of vinyl tube running from the mouth, under the mud, and up over the side where it could not be seen by the camera. Most of the time I was not present at all but when it was all four of them it was me running the camera. I have no idea how they avoided re-breathing stale air but it probably helped that they were not physically working hard.

This probably does not help with the original request of this thread but it seems at least somewhat on topic. For what its worth, both of the scenes filmed were published by others.

The longer the length of the pipe, the more likely you will be breathing back your own breath. 5 feet is pretty long, so your exhalation will not leave the pipe, but pocket about a foot past your mouth. You don't want to be the only mourner at your own burial.

I tried using a solid PVC pipe before, but I had problems with making a good seal around it with my mouth (a real problem when the mud is looser), and I also chipped some of my teeth slightly (wrapping a bunch of layers of duct tape around the "mouthpiece" end helped a tiny bit). I now use a flexible corrugated plastic shop-vac hose which squeezes nicely between my teeth, and I inhale through the hose and exhale through my nose, to keep from breathing my exhaled air back in from the hose, just like others have cautioned you about. If you were to use a hose instead of a pipe, make certain the other end will not sit in or be pulled through water or watery mud, because you don't want anything that can block or pour down the hose into your mouth/lungs! With hoses, you can face forward, upward, downward, and any other direction under the surface, while with a pipe, you are limited to only one position, determined by the shape of the pipe - upward if it is straight, and forward if it has a bend. I don't know if you could be able to go 5 feet under, as I have enough trouble breathing past 2 feet under in organic mud! But, it varies with the thickness/wateriness of the mud, and through experience, you will be able to determine where your comfort limits are.
I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!
