It's an awesome looking natural location, but I would be wary of anything that smells of hydrocarbons.
Some of the more noxious fumes put off by geological events like this are heavier then air, and can easily collect in that 3-4 food depression around the mud itself. You could step in and find yourself surrounded by unbreathable atmosphere and unable to quickly get out.....
I'm probably being overly cautious and talking out of my ass, but the above scenario popped into my mind when you started using words like "Petrol" and "Carbon Dioxide".

Mudpot on the west side of the Salton Sea are just south of the Octillo Wells off road vehicle area but they are so small, they're not worth visiting if your aim is to get in them. If you do decide to vist, you will need a 4-wheel drive vehicle capable of climbing a substantial sand hill to get the last eighth of a mile. Suggest you park and walk instead...

From what I've read about that part of the world, there doesn't seem to be a significant amount of oil in the area, so I don't think dangerous hydrocarbons are really an concern. After all, if there was any oil, someone would be drilling for it. The mud pots seem to be powered by a modest amount of geothermal energy--enough to be warm, but nothing like superheated Yellowstone springs. Sounds ideal, actually.

Was there a solid defined bottom in the pit? :)
