Long hair shouldn't be a problem provided you have a decent amount of cleanup water. Duck your head under and shake profusely, most of it will come out. If I can get clay out of mine this way regular swamp mud should be a breeze.

Peat's kind of weird. It's not as bad as Velcro, I guess, but it's got some of those same properties.

I duck my head under water. You can't get peat out with your hands. So I use this very big-toothed plastic brush, and I do mean big teeth far apart...and brush my hair under water...that does the trick.

I had to teach this technique to Mestiza.

I haven't tried going under at Massivia yet with those thousands of little stick things...but the dolly didn't have a major problem so maybe that won't be TOO horrible.

dunno if this will work for anyone but several of the Studio 588 actresses have taken to putting a small amount of baby oil in their hair prior to a scene in the pit pits. They say, and I think they are right, that the peat washes out more readily that way when the hair is rinsed using flow from a hose.

personally i'd choose a warm day, and wear swimming goggles and pit in apair of earplugs (obtainable from any pharmacy)...

I know the apprehension you have about going in,Im in Canada and I often encounter many muskeg bog pits in the local forest area,s here.The mud consistency is very thick and this one bog is over 6 ft. deep and I finally tried it out last July, it was close to some very small trees so I tied a very long rope and slowly jumped in.
I sank to my chest immediately and I was ok unless I moved around, this is when I became concerned, so I began to pull myself out and it wasn,t easy, I pretty much had to claw and squirm out trying to hold on to the rope and did worry a bit. I think if your doing this on your own you will definately need an escape plan and an unfit person could tire themselves easily struggling, I mean you see the gals trying to get out on the videos and such but they do have help if they have problems, when your alone in timbuktu you could run into problems.
I always wondered if the mud was deeper like 8-9 ft deep could a person sink completely in if they struggled enough? man thats scary stuff...not to be messed with if your unprepared.

Lonesinker, maybe next time, try a sheet of wood that you lay on the surface and push down on..the wood or plastic come to think of it would spread out the force of your hands pushing down as you raise yourself. rescuers use platforms to spread out their weight when they help someone out and the rescuers can be right on the mud or quicksand.
