Kristine - I included that in my bottom 10 list because of the speed. But I love the movie ("I'm not left-handed, either .."). My criticism was of the scene itself - so quick (no pun). The movie treats the QS (or lightning sand) scene with the same irreverence as all of the other topics covered and spoofed (Sleep well, ... and dream of large women... ").

And by the way, on my old VHS movie jacket, they call it quicksand in the text description - their bad.

Sorry, I just couldn't help it, I have a soft spot for that movie.

I haven't seen that one but I've heard plenty of others praise it. A movie can be a good movie while the quicksand scene sucks (and not like quicksand should suck).

The reverse is true of other movies. Years and years ago, I rented "Blood Beach" just because it had what looked like a quicksand scene on the cover and I stacked two VCRs to copy this just because of that artwork.

I did copy the whole thing. Egad! What an awful movie! It's horrible! It's really really bad!

But it did turn out to have three sinking scenes. Two female scenes and one male. They were pretty good too but ???
Not one of them looked a thing like the cute gal in the swimsuit on the cover.

Maybe the worst quicksand scenes of all are the ones that turn out not to have ever been filmed.

P.S. I too think that your avatar rocks, Kristine!

Thanks Nessie, I think this is one Duncan took, I know he was at least there for it. This one, of course, was years ago!! :)

"As You Wish" to all ( you have to see that movie to know what that means) 8-)

Never mind 'watery' quicksand or bark chips floating in a bathtub, the WORST scenes are where they bury the actress/actor up to their ankles in normal, beach sand and they pretend to struggle while not sinking at all! Then someone happens along and 'rescues' them while their only ankle deep! LAME! A big thank you to all the producers and actresses at the peril sites for their willingness to get 'down and dirty', overturning these terrible scenes with their fine work.

The Princess Bride's lightning sand scene actually does get the heart beating in nervous suspense.

Buttercup steps on it, and screams as she quickly disappears into it. As Westley watches with shock, the small hollow left in the ground fills in and levels out, indicating that our dear lady has gone DEEP!!!

And she had her mouth open to scream as she went under, no doubt getting a mouthful of the sand.

Westley uses his sword to cut a tree branch to hang low, grabs it and dives into the lightning sand head first. A suspenseful half minute or so goes by while an ROUS - rodent of unusual size - sniffs around the surface of the death trap, then wanders away. Finally, hand over hand emerges from the sand, and Westley climbs out, Buttercup holding onto him, and they gasp for breath through their sand-crusted faces.

I don't know about anyone else, but to me, that's peril. No buoyancy, and Westley could only save them as long as that tree branch didn't break off entirely.

I've always avoided discussing my favorite scenes, since I really hate the idea of one of our active models or producers wondering "why not me?"

Likewise, I can;t really discuss my least favorite. I do know what I like and what I don't like, but I tell ya, I do NOT want a personal preference of mine to end up in the wrong ear and cause someone who is out there doing it to feel bad.

And, despite what the thread was set out for, the only scenes I feel even merit discussion (in either direction) are those produced by the community. The people who made Beastmaster, or Blood Beach, or Jungle Book were not out to make fetish scenes. Quicksand was just a random danger for them, and they treat it as such. It's not worth praising or berating because we're just not their target audience.

I'll go this far and no farther: anyone who has actually participated in making a quicksand scene has every right ot be proud of their accomplishment, regardless of whather I like it or not!

I hate the tease of a quicksand scene.

A movie on HBO years ago was about the making of a jungle movie by a low budget hollywood crew, and it was soft porn as I remember. The lead fetching actress grabbed the director and yelled MAKE THE MOVIE ABOUT ME, DESPERATE IN THE JUNGLE, ESCAPING THE CLINGING VINES, THE QUICKSANDS .............and the idea went away never to be heard from again.

I caught a German film, if memory serves, showing scenes of a striking tall blond in leather and boots stomping about some damn castle. She walked outside - it was winter and snow was on the ground and past a sign that said DANGER QUICKSAND. Nothing came of that one but had she done it, she would have won the COLD ACTING award that also belongs to Robert Redford for his fish hunting scene at the beginning of JEREMIAH JOHNSON. I have been in those mountains and believe me the water is frigid even in summer!!!!!

I dislike quicksand scenes shot dead level with grass in the way so you never see the mud.

I dislike quick-quicksand scenes, ya know, 10 seconds, BLOOP GONE and we move on.

Mostly anything where the scene is too brief and the quicksand looks too unrealistic.

I think missed opportunities are the worst... all tease, no payoff! :x
