The quarry I sink in is frequented by dirt bikes, quads, mud trucks, etc. I think I've been seen by those a few times but never confronted. Then one time.....

I suppose I have, not so much in the middle of a mud pit but often in the process of cleaning or moving around while muddy.

Ratio wise I suppose every few attempts I run into someone but after all this time I've stopped being bothered. I always take the least trodden woodland area yet least doesn't mean never!

1st time caught

This was ages ago, probably 7 years. The mud was shallow and I'd just knelt down to find a couple coming along the exact track. I panicked and hid around the bend but that just left me barefoot and unable to reach my spare clothes. By the time they left, I thought I was in the clear but I saw them watching from up higher as I collected my things!

They left quick after starring, I had an awkward glance later once we passed again near the car park. Overall, could have been far worse, they probably thought I was hiding something in the woods.

2nd time

I won't list all of these but this time I was waist deep in muddy water sliding around when I noticed a guy starring daggers at me from up a height. I froze, he must have been watching me for a while and I didn't know what to do. He was at least 15 metres away so I just leapt up in the end and ran off. He never followed or said anything, but I learnt to check my surroundings!

Other times

Mostly, I've had the odd comment about why I'm soaked, or if I fell over when walking past people but otherwise nothing negative. Today actually, I had a cyclist see my legs covered in mud after I visited a mound near a farmers field. I pretend to look lost and off balance to give the impression I had fallen over, not that he said anything, just looked at my funny.

Same day I found a thigh deep marsh and after sinking I climbed out to reach a close stream for washing. A man saw me clear as day, covered in mud and stopped repeatedly to stare, move, stare again and at one point I thought he'd take a photo

I should say, I was fully clothed while sitting in the stream when another man passed by. i just paid him no mind and I guess he'd seen stranger things and just walked on too.

So to end, I've been caught muddy a few times but never sinking deeply or anything, usually washing off or while finding a spot too!

Not actually caught while in quicksand, but seen by neighbours and onlookers as I walked home soaked from my ribs down after I'd been stuck in a quarry when I was in my early teens back in the '70s.

It was a cold autumn day and I was desperate to get home to warm up in the shower. I got some bemused looks and some asked if I was OK. I could hardly reply due to early onset hypothermia, but I managed to nod and grunt, " Y-y-yeah. "

I was asked later what had happened and I replied I'd " accidentally " stepped into quicksand while walking around a nearby quarry. They said I was lucky to not have drowned or if I couldn't get out I would have froze to death eventually.

I was more glad I hadn't lost my sneakers !
