Looks divine. Nice and silky.....
Reminds me of El-Totumo...
SIgh... Whyizzit that I live on a volcano and it's a dud as far as sinking spots go? (I know the answer, I am just whining rhetorically....)

Living on a more active volcano might not be such a blessing...

This one's pretty active. And you are right. I'll wager that the folks who lost their houses in the lava flows would
very much agree.

Some of the more noxious fumes put off by geological events like this are heavier then air, and can easily collect in that 3-4 food depression around the mud itself. You could step in and find yourself surrounded by unbreathable atmosphere and unable to quickly get out.....
I'm probably being overly cautious and talking out of my ass, but the above scenario popped into my mind when you started using words like "Petrol" and "Carbon Dioxide".
Check out the USGS studies on carbon dioxide at Mammoth Mountain, CA.

According to a 2008 study (linked below), the Salton Sea area has 2 different types of mud gryphons/volcanoes: ones that are solely carbon dioxide bubbling up, and the warm/hot spring-fed ones.

Re: Salton Sea Recon Mission (QS jackpot!)
Well finally made it there today.... there is no standing water and they almost look dried up but then there still are the volcanos still perking. Found one with an opening a man or woman could drop down in but having nowhere to clean up just dipped my feet and legs in the hole. Was very warm and upon pulling them out about a 1/4 to 1/2" layer of smooth silky clay hung on. As it started drying could imagine it would of felt like a body cast drying if I'd of only jumped on in then got out to dry out. But unfortunately driving a rental car can't do that without a cleanup plan. Looks like though that possibly there is bulldozers pushing these over lately and with the geothermal plant just to the northeast of site it would be no wonder. Hopefully will post some pics later and headed now to check out the Tecopa Hot Springs Mud
