Nowadays, you don't need a green screen with a webcam. So long as nothing moves, software can capture the webcam's view of the room while you are out of it, and then after that, differentiate you from that background, allowing that background to be replaced with anything you like.

The kind of filter Boggy Man has described is, indeed, featurede in video editing systems; at least in the highe end ones. As mentioned, it is critical that nothing in the background moves while the camera is operating. That is, the background behind the live model has to match, pixel for pixel, the image used to make the filter. The lighting also needs to be constant between the two images and the camera can not pan, zoom, or shake.

Bear in mind, however, that any background removal, greens screen or whatever, only removes the background. It does not provide for any interaction between performer and background. This means the process can really not be used to place the performer in quicksand. You CAN use a monochrome filter (greenscreen, bluescreen, etc) to do this (although it is very tricky) because the green filter simply removes what is green (within a certain range). For the technical purists, I am simplifying this a good deal when I say the filter removes "green," of course.

First of all, my iMac has that feature in its iChat and Photo Booth software.

But, when I search for webcam background/backdrop replacement/substitution/change, I do get a number of sites with webcam software, but they don't go into details about that, just that among the effects, there is background replacement. But, some may have a chunky boundary between you and the new background, as seen here.

But, there should be better results with high enough quality software, in which case it could be made to work. You just have to have something like a board set up to cut off the lower part of the view of you from the camera, and then have the camera capture the background without you to memorize it, have a picture of a bog where the top of the board is across the middle of it replace the background, and then stand behind the board (try not to touch it), and slowly lower yourself behind it, which would make it look like you are sinking into the bog. But, lack of movement of the mire might not look right during the "sink", unless a video of a bog undulating is used for the background, where someone is submerged in that video and making the mire quake from a central point, and have the video loop through that submerged part, and have the center of the quaking coincide with the top middle of the board. You could even take a static image of mud and animate it to make it undulate through the use of appropriate software.

If a phone numer/setup is an issue, you could use a Google voice line which offers free calls in the US and Canada. Establish a free number and then later you can forward your calls to another line if you ever need to continue this. If you get calls you no longer want/like, you can block numbers. You could also extend into a fun txt message exchange with whoever you want to participate with with no cost to you.
