Yeah, I noticed that, too. I think you hit the nail on the head: it's loading a cached version. Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about that. The cache is one of the many things that was overhauled in the new version of phpBB.

I notice that any actual reload returns the correct display (highlight rmoved). I deduce from that that when the greyed out display under the message that the item has been marked read returns to the normal display, no actual reload is taking place. That is, everything occurs on the client machine except for the actual marking of the item as read. That would explain the behavior pretty well and would also indicate that no alteration is possible without getting into the javascript code (not a good idea).
