Yes that is part of the point. I would think more of the feeling of “risk”.
I'm not a big fan of submersions, although I do appreciate and enjoy that one is imminent in a scene.
And I think that FFoxX is onto something with his distinction. For me, the word 'Lethality' fits better than 'Fatality'. In any case, the theme is not death. I don't actually visualize anything happening under the surface, but that idea that the situation is inescapable adds to the appeal.
I know it's different for everyone. But this discussion (and I generally don't like to 'think too much') has gotten to the point where I feel able to explain my personal thought process better.
