Video idea....

Postby jagfiles » Thu Jun 12, 2014 1:14 am

Has this ever been thought of before for a quicksand video?
It's called "The Swimming Lesson."
F1 takes F2 out for her very first swimming lesson. Both are obviously dressed in bikinis.
As they arrive at the area they begin to go over to the swimming area but they never get there. Between them and the water is a patch of quicksand and they naturally both wind up in it.
As they sink and struggle to get out one could comment "Now it's time to SINK OR SWIM!"
Thought this could be an idea for someone to use if it hasn't been thought of/done before.

Yes, it has been done. In fact, it was even called "Swimming" from MPV, and starred Violet and... Janice, right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

And Jesus Christ dude, enough with the suggestions of scenes built solely around kitschy and clichéd catchphrases. I can say, as a huge fan of the aforementioned Swimming video, if either of the actresses at any point uttered your suggested phrase, that would've been it for me. Scene over. With what you're suggesting, they may as well look directly at the camera after saying that, and then smile as a laugh track plays. No one wants that kind of shit in their porn. No one.

Although I believe in the right to criticize I think those who do so should consider what they say before they say, especially in regard to the manner in which something is said. Allow me to present my reasoning.

A very famous scientist (Nobel Prize, Manhattan Project, and other credits) was once asked how it came to be that he came up with so many good ideas. His response was that the way to do that was to come up with a lot of ideas and then throw out the bad ones. His point was that one should try to be uninhibited enough to be able to express ideas without the fear that they might be bad ones. The decision as to what ideas are bad, and can be thrown out, can come later.

This forum represents a community of people with a common interest. One of the things such a forum can do, and should do in my view, is to encourage its members to generate good ideas. If the scientist in my example is correct, and I think he was, then this means members should be encouraged to generate ideas. Lot's of them!

One can make the response that the response made here was simply to throw out a bad idea. Or, since no one is infallible with respect to value judgments, to give an opinion that the idea was a bad one. Fair enough. But, look at the way that response was phrased and the likely effect on such phrasing. In my opinion, that phrasing goes beyond saying the idea is not good. It goes beyond saying the idea would be very bad from one member's perspective. It insults the person making the suggestion. In doing so, it will tend to have the effect of reducing the chances of the person making the suggestion, not to mention other people who may have ideas, to express them. This is, I think, not good for the community.

One last thing.
The story line was NOT meant to be based on that one line.

I could cite countless threads started by this guy that are essentially "Here's an idea for a scene built entirely around some clichéd saying/catchphrase/prop/costume/joke/gag/pun/holiday/etc." Most of these are objectively not good ideas. I mean, seriously, puns? This is pornography we're talking about, gags have little place here. Yet he suggests them practically machine gun-style, just to see what sticks I guess (which is near 0%). While I disagree with you that my post was inherently insulting, I do agree with you that my post could potentially reduce the chances of this kind of suggestion thread being made in the future, because, honestly, that was kind of my point. My expressed point was essentially "Tone it down with the bad ideas. You don't have to post literally every inspiration for a QS video that comes to your mind."

Mmmmmm, yeah it kind of was. And if not, then you didn't do a great job of representing that fact. It seems, from an outside perspective, that you were merely thinking up phrases and clichés that involve the word "sink," and then came across "sink or swim" and then built a scene in your mind that could accommodate the use of said phrase, effectively shoehorning it awkwardly into a scene.

There is not much left I can say to Ace, except to stop feeding him. I will say, however, that I vehemently disagree with his characterization of everything in the quicksand genre as porn. Some of it borders, distantly, on porn. Much of it is not even close. As to telling a member to "tone down" anything, that is for a moderator to do. So far as I am aware, Ace is not a moderator.

I disagree there.

Ace is within his rights to be critical of someone else's ideas, just as others are within their rights to be critical of Ace's comments. I'm sure Ace is aware of this, and this is why he is comfortable being upfront with his opinions.

The heart of an online community is how members interact with each other, and that includes dealing with disagreements and criticisms. A moderator can remove posts that flagrantly violate rules, and act on discretion when necessary. Arguably, a moderator who "tells" people to change their behaviour is one who goes outside their duties. For most cases, moderator intervention is a last resort, when a situation has gone out of hand and requires administrative tools to resolve (such as suspending a user). This is done through members reporting posts. Otherwise, moderators are mostly janitors who keep the forums clean, not figures of authority. The community points out a mess that needs to be cleaned up, and the moderator handles it.

There have been numerous incidents in the past that involved members asking others to "tone down" certain behaviours - and I have done so myself on numerous occasions before I was a moderator. Some of these incidents were resolved with members acknowledging dissenting voices. Moderator action was only needed when members "lost it" and became blatantly abusive.

In short, the statement that only moderators can tell people what to do is false. Members can ask, tell, suggest, demand, etc. And they can be disagreed with or ignored. By extension, in the interests of being a neutral party, moderators should not be telling people what to do.

When I said "it is for a moderator" my intent was that it is not for a non-moderator to dictate anything. I was responding to Ace's quote, "Tone it down with the...." which may in fact have been a misquote which, as quoted, had what was to be a statement of direction.

And he is free to make such a statement. If the recipient of the comment wishes to ignore it, they are free to do so. This is hardly an example of a member dictating what should be done.

All I can say is I hope no one is inhibited in the expression of their creativity.
