Quicksand photo on Christian Website

So this is a bit... baffling.

I was randomly searching for quicksand gifs to just show one of my friends and I came across this picture of Syn from PRP (actually its from one of my favorite scenes too. Very well done) that is being used on a Christian website. The topic is "Rescued". They use pictures to represent each topic and was shocked to see that picture/quicksand being used.

Quicksand is a classic metaphor for sin in Christianity. There's one hymn I remember when I was a kid, "On Jesus the solid rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand." And I remember one of the old Spirituals with the line "My feet were snatched from the miry clay."

I can not say too much without implicating myself so pardon the lack of specificity in this. I attended a Church affiliated institution from third grade all the way through college and was noted for being something of a rebel-without-a-clue. I often refer to it as being raised by the Taliban. You can not imagine how I felt when I saw one of my photos being used to illustrate something similar at that very place.

I have had many conversations with a certain fellow about the sinfulness, or rather, the lack thereof, of my personal habit of sinking into every bog I can find, and the possible reactions of religious folk should they ever be told.

He said:

"It can't be wrong. God made the mud."

The reasoning, near as I can figure, is that God wouldn't have made that mudpit and then told humans not to have contact with it. God made mud, and it's good, so it's perfectly okay for me to sink in it.

I have heard religious doctrines that make far less sense than that, so I'm going to take that and sink with it.

Actually, although it's a mild form of piracy, "borrowing" a photo that's under copyright without permission or even giving credit is a form of internet piracy.

A lot of times, the attribution will be either at the end of the page, or if a hard copy, on the back page. If it happens that the place where they got it didn't have an attribution, they may have thought it was public domain (if they were bad boys and girls, and cropped/clipped off the attribution they deserve a Gibbs-slap across the back of the head) . Most of the pics I have seen in media like that have CORBIS or some other photo clearinghouse name at the lower right corner (the name of the other guy who was featured on the church bulletins if my youth escapes me at the moment; it was usually on the back page).

I am the author of the blog, and I want to apologize for using the picture without authorization. I really had not thought about the copyright aspect of internet pics that we use just as illustrations on blogs and such. Someone mentioned that it should have been attributed on the bottom of the article. That's what I will do from here on out. Once again, I had really not even given it a thought, but you are absolutely right. And, yes, I just did an internet search to find that pic and thought it very well illustrated my thoughts. It was very well done. I didn't do any research on the source, nor did I even think it through to lend consideration for the proper credit to be given and in that I was wrong.

I hope it's okay that I posted a response on this. I noticed my stats were spiking over the last few days and then when I saw the primary referring source was this site, I did a search in the site's engine for my blog domain name and found this thread. If anyone was offended that I used the image, I truly do apologize. It wasn't my intent to cause any harm, and I'm sorry for this lack of thinking on my behalf. I have taken the pic down and replaced it with another, which is cited at the bottom of the article.

Friend, nobody is offended. Just getting a laugh at a an object of sexual fetish being used to illustrate scripture. It does make the point that care needs to be taken with such things but I feel more for you than I do us.

But as that dear mud partner of mine mentioned earlier on this thread has said...God made the mud, and so it is all okay.
