Attempted sinking

Today, since I'm on vacation in Ft. Lauderdale and saw that there was a spot located near me on the sinking map, I decided to go try to find it. While I did find some mud that allowed me to sink up to my thighs, I just ended up getting lost in this swamp and now I have cuts all over my legs I'd call it an unsuccessful attempt. I dunno. Any advice for future attempts on sinking?

This happens often for me as well, but I don't get cuts on my legs, because I wear raingear in the mud. (It is also easier to clean). If I can't get the mud upto my armpits, I will pull my legs in front of me to give me more room to sink. (Often this isn't easy to do, especially with boots or waders, and when the mud is thick).
When it comes to sinking, my my style is to just wing it and get in immediately. However, I wouldn't reccomend this.
