hey every one just wondering how to find good clay pits and mud pits? ie how to tell if ts safe, how to sneak in to a quarry so on I really wana go mudding before it gets to cold

You'll hear two sides to this argument. One that says clay pits are the best thing every and other who say its illegal and never go near them.

Where abouts do you live and are there any in your area?

I don't go around sneaking into private property such as quarries, but you can if you want to. As of finding good sinking spots, is quite difficult. You could try checking the map of sinking locations to see if there is anything worth going to.

Sometimes I have to drive hundreds of miles from home to get a good sink .

I don't know as it's exactly two sides...if said claypit is on private property, then both are true.

So, to actually answer your questions:

There are two options on how to find a location. Neither of them are easy or fast. One is to get involved here and hope to network your way into it. Geography, however, is usually not your friend, meaning, it may be difficult to meet someone close enough to help out. And not everyone will wish to share. However, if you post your location and ask, you might get lucky.

Number two is to go out and look for them. Use Google Maps. Find wet places and go to them. Be aware that the images are dated, though...you can only use this as a guide as to where something could be, not where something actually is today.

How to tell if it's safe, I'm not sure, because the only way to find out is to go try it. However, I never ran into a problem with a mudpit anywhere. Scrapes, poison sumac, bug bites, and unwanted people, yes, but dangerous mudpit (even deep) -- not really. It is probably worth noting, though, that I am a sensual sinker. If that's you too, you will naturally seek out safe locations, but if you do love real danger, then danger management is at your choice and discretion entirely.

How to sneak into a quarry -- you're on your own with that one. I am glad I have lived during the times that I have, for the way businesses are sprouting cameras like yard weeds, quarries are doomed to drop firmly off the list of reasonable risks.

I'm in the same boat as Muddypuppy. I recently got interested in finding a mud pit and have been searching around this summer. (I'm in PA - if anyone has suggestions) I've recently had some success with finding mud - at a state park about an hour away. I recalled being there on a muddy hike last summer and thought I'd check it out this year. That exact spot wasn't so muddy but I investigated some muddy spots along the various streams in the park and found deep mud! (that being maybe up to my knee at the deepest spot) I'm not too worried about the safety of the location, the biggest risk is that since it is in a state park, an occasional person could come by - which could be less than ideal at an inopportune time. I'd like to go back and explore the park (and maybe another park more) but it does take a lot of work. I've looked on Google (and Bing) maps to scout out some trails near lakes and streams, but haven't done too much to explore those yet. It would be cool to find a 'partner in crime' to go exploring with, it seems hard to find someone whose interests align with mine. (Again, anyone in or near western PA, I'm open to suggestions or potentially meeting up)

I feel like my 'holy grail' of mud pits for me would be to find one that's at least a few feet deep, and somewhere where people aren't likely to pass by on their hikes. While I'm at it, I think it would be cool to just lay out in the sun, while still covered in the mud. But at this point, I will settle for getting some mud on me when I can! Good luck to you.
