How was the quicksand scene in Dinosaurus!(1960) animated?

Postby Zavvnao » Tue Sep 29, 2015 7:28 pm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKA3g0GMOWs This is a unique scene in my opinion, and I am curious a to how they animated that sinking dinosaur.

I know or at least guess it is stop-motion, but that quicksand looks interesting, and I am interested in how they did it. Pudding?

and as an edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isY39VD7ijY (The quicksand is near the end is what I am mainly interested in, not the boot stuff at the start.) , so ishow about the one in this scene? I am intersted in how these are done and such.

I have an interest in dinosaurs, tar, and quicksand as I grew up with a lot of things involving all of that.

Definitely stop motion. Probably had to be something pretty thick, you couldn't have it flowing around between taking pictures or it would screw everything up.
Loved this movie as a kid......nothing better than nicely aged cheese. :D

That's some serious cheese. The soundtrack, alone, is a museum piece for dramatic sequences.

I grew up with it also ^^ I was sort of horrified at that scene and the helpless dinosaur, but it was there at the start of me getting interested in this stuff X3

And I know it is stop motion, just was curious about the affects and am trying to learn how they got the stop-motion sinking before it is too late to learn.

^^Maybe it's colored grease? Like car grease I mean. That would give you the shiny goop look but it wouldn't move unless manipulated.

It certainly did look like car grease.
And Hollywood back then loved it's quick and simple SFX solutions!
