Yeah, let's take a look at the good old days.

That would be cool! A piece of history from the days when the Internet moved at the blinding speed of a snail!

Now if I could only remember where I left my CompuServe install floppy!

Yep, the internet WAS slow in the mid 90's by today's standard. On the other hand it was a LOT faster than what we had to deal with in the early 80s. In 1983 I had to get a document of 108 pages printed using what was called a "letter-quality printer." As a younf faculty member at a university I had the right to make use of the ONLY such printer on the entire campus of some 6000 students. To do so, however, I had to use a dial-up modem to connect to the university computer from home. I had to have the document in five separate files because 108 pages would not fit in one file, which meant starting an upload five times at least (more if there was a disconnect) and watching it upload at a blindingly fast 30 characters per second (what was called 300 baud).

No one in their right mind would do such a thing, but as the document meant the end of my graduate school studentship I was not really in my right mind, so i did it. The whole document took ALL DAY to upload and another whole day to get it printed.THAT was slow.

Those were the days. Start to download one still picture (and not particularly high res), go make yourself a sandwich, and come back to see if it was finished. It was a grand day when we switched from AOL to EarthLink, and EarthLink support helped me figure out why my connection sucked. (Needed a new modem string.) All of a sudden, I had 28.8k first try, every time, with the same hardware. Glorious speed!

Who else remembers the first time they typed "quicksand" into a search engine?

Me! 1998. That engine was Netscape. What a wonderous time that was.
