Sinking in Oil
People like to hypothesize and dream anout sinking into tar or oil or similar things. This popped up on my fb feed.. a guy jumping into a pool of old motor oil.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Holy shit that is so toxic why would anyone do that?!? The chemicals soak right into your skin. Just use black-strap molasses, it looks the same and won't kill you.

Glad someone came out and said this! I remember people asking for tar pit scenes for ages using real tar, and having to be reminded how that is such a bad idea. Now with the MPVbleck, they have a feasible facsimile of such, and I look forward to seeing more dramatic uses of their pit. (Maybe with a cavegirl or three? Just saying....)
There is a reason we consider this fantasy... amazing how some seem to forget this.

There are several ways to make a simulated tar pit, all of them expensive, but all also a LOT safer than using anything made from petroleum.

I agree. Breaking it down pretty much misses the point.
The images we grew up with are what stimulates the brain. Prehistoric animals sank in tar. Big tanks and pools are filled with oil, not molasses.
If I shoot something like this, it's going to be tar and/or oil. There's no need to talk about anything else. That's Gemma covered in oil, right? It's awesome.
Btw - if you want to see her in some interesting peril, check out the giant Scorpion scene in Clash of the Titans (2010). Very cool.

Re: Sinking in Oil
Certainly within what might be called the "modern era" I think it is quite likely that more people have drowned in molasses than in tar. There were something on the order of 20 in a single "molasses flood" in Boston in 1919.
