Bottomless Mud in Colorado!

I JUST got back and cleaned up from a trip to a near by mud field in the Denver metro. I drove past this place this morning, and it looked to be a little flooded. I didnt think anything of it, but dropped a pin to reference later.

I was pretty bored this afternoon, and looked up the pin to see what the situtation was like. I noticed that there were no other businesses within view, no fences on any side, and it was within a few hundred feet from a very secluded road. I drove past that road, and it just looked perfect...no street lights, no obstructions, and there was a side road used for night fishing parking. I couldnt think of a better place.

So once it got dark, i dressed in my wetsuit, and threw some clothes over. I drove 5 mins from my house to the road, and I didnt see another car anywhere. I quickly walked to the edge of the field, and started to walk down the brush. Within moments, i was standing above a huge (1/8 mile X 1/4 mile) field of deep mud.

I took off my clothes, readjusted my wetsuit, and stepped toward the mud. My first step in, and I was up to my thigh! I took another step, and I ended up to my waist. It was sooo deep, i couldnt even feel the bottom. I leaned forward, and steadied myself on my belly, and bobbed around the soft spot of mud at the top layer. This mud wasnt exactly quarry mud, but very soft and smooth. I rolled over to my back, and slid my way to the bank.

I wanted to get deeper. I walked a ways down the bank, and looked for a spot that had some water puddles. I jumped as high as I could, feet first, and ended up all the way to my neck! Im 6'6", couldnt even feel the bottom. I sttuggled to get mysef out, which the wetsuit bouyancy helped a bit, and back on the shore. I was covered in the soft black mud. I decided to go back to a soft corner to finish myself off whiling rolling around.

There was a small pond of water i could have cleaned up at, but I didnt want to trust the cleanliness of it, so i just rolled down my wetsuit with the mud on the inside and waited till i could hose it off at home.

This stuff is great! It is only a night sinking spot, but there is enough ambient light to let you see what your doing. I love how I wasnt even trying, and found such a great spot so close to home...and in all places, Colorado!

sounds like an excelent adventure and a great place for total submersion,. shame it wasnt in the day time so you could get pics and video for us

I might have to return in early AM on a sunday or something. Now that I found a spot (which has been bugging me FOREVER), ill have to put some thought into filming.

It is possible there is enough ambient light to film with a good camera at night.

You should snap a photo of the spot during the day time just to show it to everyone!

Two decades ago with what is now ancient technology, I filmed with no problems at night at a mudpit using only four candles for illumination...

The large lime green pool is where the mud is. There are some other soft spots in the area, but there is only one area that has the bottomless sludge.

Im not sure what this area is really used for. I assume it is mostly water retention for when we get big rain storms.

There are a number of great places in Colorado. I lived there for 20 years and found some awesome spots! I never tried the one you did, mainly because it was too close to I-76 and when I lived there the area was crawling with police!

I was going to PM you with a Google Earth file with three other spots for you to check out, but you don't have permission for PM's.

For some reason, I just assumed Colorado was some dried out desert with no real mud options. Im glad that after a little bit of digging, I have found a few spots.

I still have yet to check out Cherry Creek, Barr Lake, or the other large bodies of water. I know that after the water levels go down, a lot of mud pops up. I just feel too exposed at the lakes to feel comfortable.

I also found a dried up pond right near my house, but it is protected wetland. It would feel a little unethical to get off in protected lands, so I have been holding myself back from sinking in that spot.

As far as that place off of 76, it is close to the highway, but the cars cannot see you if you stay on the south most side of the field. While walking out to it, I was surprised that there was almost no way of being seen. Right now Denver has been experiencing cancerous population growth, and an exploding homeless population. Cops dont seem to bother the urban campers. It is a blessing in disguise, as the average person doesn't bat an eye at the sight or sound of someone wandering in open spaces or brush.
