Does this image depict quicksand or something else entirely?

While looking through an art book I got recently, I saw the following image and thought, "Quicksand!?"

I'm not sure if I'm having a bad case of "seeing what I wanna see" or if this image does, in fact depict quicksand. What do you all think? Is this man sinking/trapped in quicksand, or not?

I believe this art was used in a movie poster advertising a zombie movie of some kind... however, it certainly can pass for quicksand art as well, I think.
