Tidal mud escape

Hey guys
Finally found some tidal mud just out of view from a path and I decided to have a go but was restricted by time. I was able to get just above my waist and felt no bottom but then had difficulty getting my legs back up as it was fairly thick. just wondering how other people escape from simular stuff after going even deeper as I feel it would be foolish to return without better knowledge on escaping. If anyone has any tips, I would be grateful as I hope to return soon with more time on my hands.

Without a buddy system, I carried a long rope that I anchored somewhere nearby and one of those foam bodyboards that are used in the beach.
