The good mud is over at some of the kaolin clay mines near Sandersville, Georgia.

I have been meaning to visit one of those Kaolin clay mines this year. There are a lot of different pits. I live around 3 hours away so this would be a day trip. Which location would you recommend?

There are many in the area but the one immediately north of Kaolin Field airport looks very likely to have mud...

I went there yesterday it had a lot of water in it. Plus a large boat. You could see it from the road.

A lot of quarries have a cycle of filling a hole up with a watery slurry and there will only be mud there towards the end of the period when that location is used and in the period it takes for it to dry out. Sorry you struct out on that one. Note that I've seen that location display "texture" in the Google satellite views in some prior years so there is a possibility that there has been sufficient rain to cover the mud recently. Even my best mudpit here is covered in water about half the time...

Alas, though Google satellite view is incredibly useful, only a small percentage of places that look like they have mud will actually have good mud. There are many quarries around Sandersville and I am confident that there are some with excellent mud, it is just a matter of finding them. I hope to get out there this year and if someone were to join me, the most effective search technique is to print out aerial views and then have one person drive and drop the other person off to quickly check out a possible spot and just work 'em until you find one...

Note also that if one is a skilled drone driver, wow, that would really help in the search!...
