Quicksand Fans

I'm about to get a few new videos to enjoy and was hoping people could recommend some of the ones with the best "muddy" sounds. Squishy, squelching mud is pretty much my jam. I blame all the Saturday morning cartoons and their sound effects heheh.

So what are some of the best ones, natural or artificial? Dramatic sinking or exploring preferred.

Specific kinds of sounds is going to be tough. Best suggestion I could make would be to visit some older natural mud scenes and hope they had good audio. I know I made a lot of noises that sounded like a septic tank backing up at various times but its difficult to get that on the recording.

If I may express a personal view here I will say that it is my opinion that "quicksand" is primarily a visual medium. I think that has two consequences for the inclusion of any sort of specific "sounds" in a video. First, most of the sounds that might occur in a video scene are going to be things that just happened to occur within the range of the microphone. That makes it pretty much hit and miss. Second, however, any "squelching" or "bubbling" sorts of noises or sounds that do occur are very likely to NOT correspond to anything in the visual image. The latter opens a possibility for getting desired sounds into a video. That would be for any interested person to create the sound in some way and provide it to one or more producers to add to a video where it seems appropriate to do so.

I cannot speak for other producers, obviously, but I have made occasional use of contributions of such things as background footage (for a greenscreen scene), a variety of animal noises, and thunder. Adding other sounds is technically trivial so long as the sound quality is good.

As Fred alluded to, most of the sounds of sinking are pretty subtle, and easily overwhelmed by ambient background sounds (insects, wind in trees, etc.).

The best mud sounds coming from most of my videos are when we get the bubbles going - but those are generally not dramatic scenes.

For me personally, the best sounds are squelching 'drawing' sounds that usually occur with large footwear and/or clothing moving in and out of thick, shallow mud or peat. When the conditions are right, I intent to go and record as many schlurping sounds as possible, and then utilize them on selected scene re-edits (some time from now).
