Rescue of man trapped in mud

Here is a local news story that might elicit some safety related discussions. Note that this is not a quicksand death so it does not violate Forum Rule 8.

Note that the rescuers were not covered in deep mud so IMO that suggests that the guy probably made his own little mud pit and worked himself in too deep and got stuck. He probably used his cell phone to call for help. They say that he was "quickly" rescued.

He should have had a Stream Machine and a bucket of water handy. Minnesota has had a lot of rain so there are probably a lot of usually dry areas that have loosened up.

There was another local story of a guy who got struck in the mud while fishing on a trout stream.
Someone heard him calling for help and he had to be rescued by professionals. He said that he was clearing debris in the stream and got stuck in the mud. It was not his own land but is is not illegal here to fish private areas of a designated trout stream as long as you keep your feet wet. That one was not as suspicious as this one.

Either way, people need to know when they are close to getting seriously stuck. It is a good idea to stop sinking every now and then and make sure that you can get out. Have a plan if you accidentally get stuck. Have a rope, a board, a tree branch. I have used a water toy called a Stream Machine to inject water down by my feet and legs. It works great. Cheap insurance and can double as a prop.

I was doing a little reading on Mud Rescue.
I found this. They mention injecting water or air to relieve suction.

"The Mud Lance injects water or air to assist in the release of any suction effect created by the material that the victim may be trapped in."

Also,

"It is recommended that compressed air be used for dry substances and estuary type mud, and river silt and water for heavier soils such as clay like substances."
