My appologies for not adequately explaining the "flange" concept. I used that term to mean a part that will flare outward from the main container while leaving the main container open to the sky. This would make the apparent surface area of the tar pit much larger than the actual container. This is important because the material to fill the container is expensive. Because the "flange" portion will also have "tar" in it there must be a reliable seal between the flange and container. Otherwise the tar will leak out. When the pit is not in use there must also be a cover to keep out rain and other debris. This cannot be a flexible plastic sheet because that would allow puddling. I will be quite astonished if what is needed can be purchased off the shelf.

In all truth, I would so love to go over there and help—it wouldn’t be far for me. My problem would be finding a day or more and a good excuse to be out of pocket.

I was thinking, I don’t know if this would help at all and maybe you already touched on this. But what if you made the center part of the pit sort of cone shaped? That might cut down on digging and material needed. Another thing, have you ever used that liquid rubber stuff? If you dug a whole and lined it with overlapping visqueen or tarps cut to the right shape, you could then coat it all in enough layers of liquid rubber to seal it.

For a cover, you could insert a pole in the middle of the pit that’s longer than the pit is deep and again use visqueen/tarps secured to outside the edges of the pit. The pole will make it like a tent and allow rain water to drain without puddling. When you want to use it, remove the visqueen/tarps and pole, and you’re ready to sink.

Thank you. The cone shape is an excellent suggestion and the pit I had partially dug for this is, in fact, cone shaped. I built an in-ground hot tub a very long time ago and tried all sorts of things to seal it. None of them worked, mainly because the surface I was trying to seal was not clean. I think the cover has to be a hard material because it must hold up to the weather for several years. If you DID decide to come here to give it a try that should be in the fall. I would not want to have an incomplete construction project while doing video shoots and hosting guests. I have no idea of your location.

Your welcome Fred! How ever unlikely it would be so awesome to come out sometime. I'll definitely let you if I can ever make it work. I'm somewhere in a neighboring state, which narrows it down to about a 350-800 mile radius depending on which way you look at it :D

Ok, I think I'm picturing this correctly, but just to be certain.....

You want a round container with a funnel shaped top, that tapers from 6 feet in diameter down to 4 feet, with the taper occuring in the top 12-18 inches. Basically a cone on top of a 55 gallon drum....? And a tight fitting lid......

I think you could make this out of heavy gauge sheet metal, and coat it with some kind of Flex Seal type compound to make it watertight and rustproof (at least for a few year lifespan). It might not even be too expensive to build. Look for a small company that specializes in formed sheet metal products.

As far as installation you could have it delivered on a truck with a small crane to lift it into the pre dug hole.

Please forgive the "taking a picture of my screen" screenshot haha, the Boss was yelling at me to get going so he could lock up.

I did some hunting around and found a site called www.eplastics.com. They claim they can make anything you want.

Thanks but I don't think the budget will support a one-off custom job. Probably not even the shipping.
