Most unique quicksand rescue...

Postby jagfiles » Sun Dec 12, 2010 8:32 am

Here's a fun question. In a TV show or movie what would you say has been the most unique way you've seen someone get rescued from quicksand?
And for more fun we can include rescue scenes from books as well.

The first one that pops to my mind is from "Get Smart", entitled "Schwartz's Island", involving a floating synthetic island created by Sigfried (a most entertaining villain), to be used to trap a fleet of ships and pull them under the water using powerful magnets. Sigfried tries to do away with Max, "99", and the "Chief" by making them step into "synthetic sand", which is "quicker" than quicksand. As they sink, Max tries using his mini-magnet to make Sigfried's "maxi-magnet" pull them out. But instead, the maxi-magnet is turned down towards them, attracting a submarine passing under the floating island, whose periscope surfaces in the quicksand and the three hitch a ride to solid ground. Here is the scene: 8-)

The "Sheena" scene with the four models wandering off and walking into quicksand has an interesting, if not totally original rescue. Sheena shows up swinging overhead from a vine, upside down, and pulls all of them in turn, the last two at once, out of the quicksand. This is a rehash of an old "Jungle Girl" scene, where Jungle Girl rescues just one guy this way. However, it is nicely done, if too short and edited.

There are three scenes where the hero dives under to rescue the damsel in distress: "Princess Bride," Hercules, Incredible Journeys," and "Tarzan (newer TW show, with Lydia Dernier as the "Jane" character). These are all good, as well.

I guess what takes the cake (literally, since they are sinking into a big cake) is the TV "Batman" where they shoot themselves out with rockets from their Bat-belts. A male scene, of no interest to me, but it is the wildest escape I have seen.

That is funny! I was thinking of that Get Smart episode as I read the initial question. :-)

I've been in mud that made plenty of fart noises as I pulled myself out.

That would have to be the prize winner. Being pulled out by a mad scientist with ALS in a flying wheelchair would be difficult to top for "unique." 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for over 20 years. Thank you.
