Quicksand Fans

In general, I tend to sink in the nude, so I can feel the wonderful mud on my skin, and skin cleans off more easily than clothes. For my videos, I wear junk shorts, and when I am loosening mud early in the season, I often wear some junk clothes (pants/shorts, jacket) to keep me less chilled during my extended exposure to the chillier mud which I keep bringing up from deeper down to mix with water and looser mud on top. After I am done, I clean the clothes in the water, swishing it, squeezing it, rubbing it, under water, until I get as much mud out as I can. Then, I wring them out, and put them someplace to dry. 8-)

Go home and dump it all into a full bathtub? Um...no...the drain will clog! Not to mention, I'd hate to see your floor after you walk across it like that!

Gotta say, I have never flooded my waders. Either I'm lucky or I just have a very good instinct about mudpits...or maybe, as somebody who gets the erotic rush from the feeling of sinking itself rather than from any danger element, I'm easily satisfied by mud that is deep but controllable and safe.

I'm glad you are okay. Sounds like a close call.

I just hose it all off in the back yard. Our houses are close together but my current neighbors are not anybody I talk to anyway. I guess I really don't care what they see. Anyway, if they ever ask, since they are waders, I will just tell them that I was wading.

I envy you about your lack of bugs, though.

I visited Massivia today and it just rained the whole time (so Camera-Baby never even got out of the car, and Little Cell Phone was wrapped in three layers of plastic) and in that environment, maybe I could flood waders -- from the top -- if I didn't wear a raincoat to keep it out, that is.

I have to keep spraying myself over and over to keep the bugs off. They love this weather. No sun, lots of humidity, it's pretty warm too...and there are lots of puddles of water to lay eggs in and make more little bugs to bug me.

Sinking naked is mighty hard to do in cool weather.

Actually, I go with swimwear since my sites aren't 100% guaranteed private but the use of thin neoprene waders has lengthened my season from thaw 'til freeze, not to mention all those sinkings I can still have when it rains all day...like today.

Flooded my boots, yes. Gotten my shorts wet and muddy when I didn't plan to, yes. Flooding chest waders? :shock:

Not me.

For cleanup, I have found that nylon "wind stop" type pants clean up and/or dry out very quickly. I even have a pair with zip-off legs 8-)

Guy's swim shorts come in the same material, also.

For cleanup of your muddy gear from this outing, hang the waders upside down over a broom/shovel/whatever handle inside each leg. For the clothes, rinse each item in a bucket of warm water by hand, changing the water several times. Add a bit of laundry detergent to the last water. Then wash your now not-too-mucky clothes as a single load, possibly running the washer empty (smallest load/cold) afterward if it looks dirty.

If you're going deep in chilly weather, remember: cotton kills. A cheap "Polar fleece" pullover (thrift store?) would be 1,000% better than any cotton shirt. If you have the resources, invest in a polypropylene thermal shirt- will stay warm even if wet, and absorb much less water than "Polar fleece." The matching thermal pants would do well if you're going to flood your waders with chill water also.

One more suggestion: Dark green or camouflage rain poncho. One of my favorite mud outfits is my nylon swim trunks, a t-shirt and hiking sandals under my dark green poncho. Stealth mudding FTW! 8-)

Close call?, you mean any danger?? No not really. That place is not that large like these big bogpuddles from boggyman in example. I could reach bunches of grass with my outstretched arms everywhere around and that long stick was right by my side. If someone unsuspecting would fall into that pit, that would have been a different matter, but that person would have been warned by that quaking ground and sucking noises a couple steps ahead
Regarding flooding: I also try to avoid that normally, but i think it was nachtjäger, who did write in one of his posts about that special "just a bit deeper"-sensation...

About that mudcaked pile of rubble: Unfortunatly i have no garden / external water-supply of my own, so i was forced to let them dry by the sun+wind outside and brush the most part off (lots of excellent soil for my potted plants, btw...). After that is washing in the bathtub possible.

Sinking in birthday suits...? That makes the difference between a true quicksandfan like you folks and some unlucky angler/geocacher/birdwatcher/naturephotographer/environmentalist like me
