Deep Ontario Mud!

Postby poolshark » Fri Jun 12, 2009 11:54 am

Hi all.
Just a couple of pics of a rather nice area that I found on an afternoon drive (lucky me). These were taken only a couple of weeks, unfortunately the water was a little high and the mud a little cool but the conditions should be ideal by now.
I'm on my way out there in just a couple of moments to "check up" on the place ;). Assuming all goes well, I will return with a few more items for your viewing pleasure.
p.s. The first time I ventured out onto this seemingly innocent looking area I immediately dropped down to my waist and continued to sink down to just below my chest....with no bottom to be found ;)
Enjoy..

Well..good news and unfortunate news...
While arriving at my little spot, I was quite suprised to notice how far the water had gone down, exposing a lot more of the dark mud. Unfortunately a good chunk of the spot is visible from a very rarely used road out in the bush, and apparently today seemed like a good day for everyone to go for a drive out in the woods. So due to a combination of an unusually high volume of traffic and a horrible swarm of nasty, pesky, BASTARD black flies, my outing was sadly cut short. I was able to snap off one good shot to compare with the others as sort of a before/after idea of how much the water went down.
On a positive note, if the weather continues to cooperate, the water levels should continue to fall quick and make for much better and more secluded sinking as the hidden areas dry up.
So be sure to expect more pics and possibly vids to come in the not so distant future :D

p.s. If anyone wishes to use these to make fakes, feel free to do so.

That area looks rather familiar, at least the general terrain

Ah yes, black flies! Swarms so thick they blot out the sun. If they were edible, we could feed the world. Piranha with wings. So fierce even killer bees stay clear of them. Stories abound about unwary travelers stalled on the side of the road, their engine's air intake and filter clogged with them. Then there are the foolish ones that ignore the local gas station attendant's advise to drain and refill their windshield washer reservoir with the only formula known in the Northern Hemisphere capable of removing their remains from your line of sight without stopping to use an ice scraper. Unfortunately, there is only one thing that eliminates them, winter.
Tearing a page from Boggy Man's travel logs for inspiration, would it be possible to provide us with some links to Google Earth maps that we may see the area from space, far above the swarms described above?

Hey, don't get discouraged.

Mud-hunting is not an immediate-gratification kind of project. Bad days happen and so do inconvenient water levels and yes, black flies.

Keep at it. You'll get in deep eventually. And if you do decide to post something sinky, we'll still be here!

Hey, blackflies are the perfect mud excuse. You were going mad from the pain, and about to be eaten alive- your only choice was to jump into a mud pit, or die a horrible death. 8-) Even blackflies won't try to bite through an inch of peat mud. Now, the Adirondack Mosquito, that's another story. . .

Seriously, on one of my mud-hunting trips, I neglected to bring bug spray. I was quite a way from my vehicle when I started to get swarmed by deerflies!!! :o Now, while I am not stop-breathing allergic to those critters, their bites swell up like crazy!!! Back at the parking lot, a couple of people wanted to call an ambulance, I looked so bad. And they ITCH!!!!!! I looked sort of like Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space 9.

I never really thought of that :D I considered the mud more of a relief than an excuse but I guess it works both ways. I think next time I will be bringin a little clothing. I usually go in without, but given the circumstance I think it would be best to try something a little different.

This particular location happens to be 14km up Ranger Lk. Road, near the Searchmont area. If you want to know more feel free to sent me a PM :)

I grew up in Northern Ontario and have been bitten so many times by blackflies I don't even react to them any more. Mosquitoes are pretty annoying and itchy but for sheer hell, nothing beats a cloud of deerflies. I worked for a mining exploration company 20 years ago and at the height of deerfly season they were swarming so thick, I had to bat them away with my hand to clear the way so I could make notes...

Nasty bastards. Some can bite through leather. Only plus is there season doesn't last too long... maybe a month before they fade away...
