I've been thinking...Quicksand really IS the best "Fetish"

I mean, to explore your fetish, you have to go out doors and hike/explore, getting fresh air and exercise in the process, and enjoying nature and life, and exploring is always fun anyway.

Yep, sinking regularly keeps me in shape and ensures that I get outdoors.

Another thing is, I've gone to many places I may not otherwise have been motivated to go, and I've seen a lot of things that human beings do not normally see. Beavers...marsh flowers...a real quicksand spring shooting up through the mud...and I hear the quacking of ducks up close when they don't realize I'm just in the mudpit behind the weeds.

The reason I see all this stuff that other people only see in pictures is because I am in places where other human beings do not normally go, like...you know...

But, while my first reaction to this idea was "You have to be kidding! Don't you realize how inconvenient quicksand really is?!" I do have to agree that it does take you to some interesting places. For my part, I have been involved one way or another in five different countries on three continents....

Poison Sumac Bog is surrounded by water on two sides. Imagine the mudpit to be in a box; one side's a creek, one side's a lake, one side's grassland and one side is forest.

So I can potentially have ducks swimming just out of sight on two sides while I'm sinking. I can't think of which clip it is offhand, but if anybody does have a quack converter, they will be able to use this on at least one currently not-edited Nessie clip which should be released sometime this winter.

For people who understand duck, it's quite possible that you'll be able to make out duck-words.

You are right. Quicksand is very inconvenient for anyone who doesn't want to be in it. And it's scary for them. I don't get it, but it is.

And it's inconvenient for those of us who want to be in it. I've never left the country but I have been to five American states beside my own in search of it. And finding it is a project; I tell people that if they don't like being out in Nature for its own sake and prefer couch-potato activities to a good long hike, they're not likely to last long on the hunt for a good useable quicksand pit.

Even after I know exactly where it is, it's a half a day project to go out and sink. It's also a quarter of a tank of gas.

But I got used to it. And it's worth it.

I agree. Some things are better because of the effort put into it, or are worth doing despite the inconveniences.

Over the years, and after a lot of searching, I enjoyed two sinking spots... one was a good hour drive away and wasn't the greatest, but I made do. The second, and one I use now, is a half hour trip and I had to cultivate it carefully. I tried several spots within the same area before finding the right one.

Despite the bugs, the bush I have to slog through - downhill to get there isn't bad, it is the struggle up which can be a challenge... and the careful planning of clean up gear, clothing changes, avoiding the gaze of neighbors and a way too short sinking season... (only managed four visits this year) it is still worth it!
