Near death experience

Has anyone here had a near death experience involving quicksand? I have. I was down around the Butler Blvd birdge that goes over the intercostal, and i knew the tide was comming in, but i was up to my neck ( had to force my way down) and at first i was already having a hard time trying to get out. I didnt panic, well when i realized my knees down were stuck in the mud while the water was at my asscheeks . after a bit of yanking and pulling i got my right leg free. but i didnt get my left leg free till the water was at my nose and i was struggling for air. Yea... i dont think i will be going anywhere sinking without a partner anymore.

I am glad you got out okay. Yes, I do recommend that you find a sinking partner next time.

I can't say I've had anything very scary happen but I don't use any tidal mud. I do not think there is anything under the sun that would convince me to go out on that either.

I know people do...but me...nope, I'm not that brave!

I do not know of any fatalities in this community.

However, people who die doing this endeavor usually do not post afterwards stating that they will no longer be heard from again because they are dead. They would just vanish from the forum.

Planning trips to tidal flats requires good research and meticulous planning.

First if you find news articles of people who died on the flats and why. Most of us have enough experience to determine what went wrong and what mistakes were made that killed them. For example, don't go to the tidal flats of Alaska because the glacial silt (powdered rock) will hold you like concrete even if you are only boot deep.

Second, plan with a full knowledge of the tides. An error here is fatal. This does not need further explanation.

While sinking if you have a hard time going down, you will have a hard time getting out. Therefore if you are wrong about the tide, you better work with the knowledge that you can get out quickly. Again, this does not need further explanation.

Perhaps there should be a topic on the risks or basic safety instructions to make?

I'm pretty sure I know who Dave is talking about, and he had posted videos here...and even in my opinion, was a little crazy with some of the things that he did while sinking....apparatus and places and such.

I tend to worry a little about Boggy, but he seems to know what he is doing. I don't take a rope when I go, but I tend to play it safe and not do anything too crazy when sinking, and that's probably the best advice I have....know your limits.

were you close to physically dying or were you dying inside your head?
to me it sounds like the ground just gave way or something. do you know about wetlands much? cause i know just down the road from me there is an area fenced off by the road saying wetlands and ive only walked around a little with no avail.

Just wanted to let people to know i do plan things out, and the fact that when i was in the tidal area i wasnt having a hardvtime going down. it was like it didnt want me to escape
