Unless the bottom is made of something that can be loosened, which is very unlikely, the best method will involve using some type of shovel.

Fred is correct about the shovel.

In the event the bottom is loose, though, just keep sinking in it...and when you're done playing, take some time to rip up the bottom with your feet.

I've deepened a couple mudpits that way.

I find that the best time to loosen the mud deeper down is early in the season, when water is covering the mud. Loosening the main mud in the pit into the water by lots of pulling up and mixing with your hands and feet makes it then easier to get the stiffer bottom stuff dislodged with your feet, which is then mushed up into the rest of the mud with your hands (I find rubbing it between your hands while keeping it submerged in the looser mud/water dissolves it into the mud/water most easily). If you keep at it, then by the time the water levels drop enough to expose and thicken the mud, you will have a deeper pit to sink into. 8-)

Another key to this is patience and perseverance. It took me a decade of cultivating to get my sinking spot as "perfect" as it was going to get... just continuing to deepen it with my feet and hands... clearing out any clutter like weeds, roots and such. It has gotten to the point where I really don't have to do much to liven it up and get it ready for its next victim...

I am a tad worried, though. This year, with the dry conditions, it nearly dried out and remained unusable to me... I'm hoping this is just temporary... hate to break off a relationship I worked so hard on over the years...

I also forgot to mention that if the already soft stuff is loosened into the water covering it early in the season to make it soft enough, then it might be easier to use a shovel to dig up the bottom in the watery mud, after which you can then mush up the pieces with your hands to mix it into the looser stuff.
