Quicksand Fans

Hi!
Can anyone tell me how deep i can sink into a real peatbog without being unable to get out well again?
I tried it several times but I always stopped when I was stuck up to my waist.
I'd like to sink down - just my head out - but I'm a bit afraid, have you got tipps for me to move out without much power?

The only problem I had with my own bottomless peat bog this year was the temperature. I got neck-deep, and out, with no problem at all.

The word "stuck" bothers me. My bog will never get you stuck. It's thick but not sticky. So, were you really and truly STUCK at your waist? If you are having trouble getting out at waist level, neck-deep obviously constitutes a problem.

I suggest that next time, go waist-deep and then an extra three or four inches. Whatever's comfortable. Then get out. Then add a few inches to that. Whatever's comfortable. Then get out. Never overdo it and yes, if in fact you start to feel dangerously stuck, STOP.

You should ALWAYS be able to move around in the mud. ALWAYS.

I tend to rise up in it with foot movements and pushing down with my hands on the thick surface of the mud. I've found that I stop sinking at around chest-or-shoulder level anyway.

I don't know what your bog-experience level is. I acquired mine slowly. Start at the shallow part, if you like, and go in with a layback. This'll feel bottomless but all you have to do is stand up.

My personal belief in doing real quicksand is that although it should feel bottomless, it should never, in fact, ever be truly dangerous.

Nessie is right-as usual-go as deep as you are comfortable then try a few inches more & come up again That way you can have as much fun & sinking as you like & no danger I have to admit I don't know peat bogs well Most of my sinking is in estuaries & clay pits which are often deep & sticky but no danger-so far that is!!

peat bogs are a sinch to get deep into mate,.. i usually go all the way under (see my videos in home movies),.. and even in the really thick stuff have never gotten stuck... the only problem is the cold (as nessie said),. plus also the deeper you go the more pressure there is on your chest,...expecially if your under and using a hose or tube to breath,.. so that limits how deep you can go before you cant raise your chest to take a breath,..holding your breath while under can allow you to go deeper,.... but struggleing deeper while holding your breath is tricky,.. as it wares you out,... which makes it harder to get out again if your lungs are bursting or air,. so the last thing you want is to be deep under with not enough air to last you for the struggle back up to the surface again

so be arefull,.. play safe,.. go with a friend,.. and have fun!,.. remember some peat bogs can be bottomless and very treacheroue,.. so chek out your spot thoroughly first and go down in stages that you are comfortable with

The key to getting back out is patience. Lean back and just kind of wiggle back and fourth. You'll eventually find yourself floating on your back on or near the surface. If it works for me in clay the consistancy of play-doh, it would almost have to work in peat.

When I played around in Quicksilt I was pretty freaked out when I couldnt pull my feet out ,, I did find out that if I leaned foward and wiggled my leggs they came out behind me so it was easier to work them out horizontaly rather than try to pull straight up !! does that make any sense ???

Anyway Im going to try and sink there once again before fall starts to settle in !
