The state of my fetish has been pretty stable now for about four years.

I'm not into the danger aspect at all. I have never needed anything to be risky. Whatever risk, peril, danger or drama that occurs when I'm sinking is truly only fantasy.

However, the time I spent in mudpits grew astronomically when I discovered that I could indeed scout and use my own sites without assistance from others.

I eventually leveled off...but gadzooks...'til I got there, I thought there'd be no end to it.

I do like bare-skin mudding but I also love my waders, for they double, triple, or perhaps -- even quadruple my sinkings.

Boots and chestwaders, among other things, are dangerous, which is not to say you cannot survive wearing them if you are skilled and/or lucky. But there's the rub, I assure you, you would not come back most of the time wearing that at most of the mudpits I frequent. Boots are the worst, if they get stuck, there's usually no sliding your feet out. Waders are fine as long as you can get out of them, but, watch out if they are overtopped by mud of a thick sandy consistency, the outcome is not certain. But most of all, watch out for somewhat rare but special categories of mud that are not even truely safe wearing even very minimal clothing that you can rip off...

But there's the rub, I assure you, you would not come back most of the time wearing that at most of the mudpits I frequent.

There is not much reason why anyone would ever WANT wear waders at a smooth, silky, creamy claypit baking warmly under a hot sun in a cloudless sky! (Oooooh, jealousy.)

You might change your mind, though, if you found your mudpit edged with ice.

(I'm with you on boots, though. They get stuck. "Aqua socks" or diving booties, not regular boots, are greatly preferred.)

Actually, the mudpits where I live will get you wet and dirty. You get peaty guck in your hair, and it's like little bits of Velcro. Your clothes get soaked. You come out grimy and streaked in dark gook.

The mudpits where he is, though, get you warmly coated with a thick layer. It doesn't really feel that wet.

He's got pure clay. I don't.

Clay on skin ROCKS! And pure clay tends not to support life.

Leeches don't do much for me...I absolutely do not have a leech fetish. Never once have I encountered a single leech in pure clay, but in my peat bogs, yes...it can happen...and waders serve to keep all my blood inside my body when I am at leechy places.

(Fortunately, this year's spot is leech-free.)

About the ice: this is the right way, when it's not deeply frozen, then it is sinking season!

Ever notice the mosquitoes aren't around then either?

I don't post often, but as one of the few around here who also enjoys waders, I thought this would be a good time to pipe up.

Like Bart, wearing protective rain gear is part of the experience for me. If it means I get more stuck into whatever I'm sinking in, that is a good thing - the sensation of being completely stuck and struggling to get back out is probably a bigger part of my fetish than the sinking itself, as is the protective gear.

The same holds for looking at pictures or watching videos - adding a pair of rubber boots or even waders makes everything instantly better. To my knowledge, no one except Nessie has ever produced anything involving chest waders, but I live in hope that there will be more. On that note - thank you, Nessie!

I think I went through a similar progression to what Bart described - years ago, going on a muddy walk in my wellies was pretty exciting, but as time went on, I needed the mud to be deeper, stickier, more treacherous in order for it to have the same effect. Paired with the rubber boot and rain gear fetish, it was only a matter of time before I started exploring potential sinking locations first with regular, and later with chest waders. I've yet to find a spot that allows me to sink past the top of those, but with the recent purchase of a second hand full rubber drysuit, I feel well-prepared for the day that I do. I hope it will work out better than in Mirador's recent story ("The last great adventure").

I am always looking out for promising sinking spots (read: remote, deep, boggy quagmires no normal person would ever go near), drawing inspiration from maps, blogs, photos and news stories of people getting stuck and sinking, hoping to find somewhere to sink very deep and get extremely stuck. I do wonder whether it will get me into trouble one day - reading descriptions of places making claims that "in bad weather, you could easily die out here" just makes me want to visit on a dark, rainy night to sink there undisturbed.

I don't know what will happen after that, but I reckon it will probably be worth another post here.
