Dayle Haddon, 76. Here’s the thing, I’m not sure if I should post this here or missed opportunities. She appeared in the movie The World’s Greatest Athlete, which had a quicksand scene with Tim Conway. She would have been great in it.

I grew into and out of the 1960’s with Peter, Paul, and Mary - their perfect harmonies. Puff the Magic Dragon was actually in our elementary school songbook. Peter wrote this simple but beautiful song from his college roommate’s poem. Despite the obvious marijuana allusions (given the names Puff and Jackie Paper), I believed Peter when he said the song was really about the loss of childhood innocence - as I have advanced through adulthood, I start to tear up whenever I listen to him sing those last two verses. One of my favorite songs to play on my acoustic guitar. If anyone here got to see them live, I envy you. RIP, Peter.

Yea, there was a lot of great (and influential) music around that time - separate from the rock scene. The Mamas & The Papas is another group that comes to mind. I was too young though, to catch all that as influential to me personally.

I'm not much into lyrics in general, but the one that chokes me up regarding innocence lost is from Comfortably Numb (emphasis mine).

When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look, but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown, the dream is gone

Anita Bryant, Pop Singer, Florida Orange Pitchwoman and Anti-Gay Rights Crusader, Dies at 84

Image

Anita Bryant, a former beauty queen and pop singer of the 1960s whose career led her to become a spokesperson for Florida oranges in the early ’70s and an evangelical crusader against gay rights later in that decade, died Dec. 16 at age 84, her family announced Thursday.

The family’s obituary for Anita Bryant Day, as she was known outside the public sphere, was published in her hometown newspaper, the Oklahoman, and said the singer-activist died at home last month in Edmond, Oklahoma, surrounded by family and friends.
