Re: To remember....
Today has become far more sobering than it once was for me after I moved to NYC a few months ago. The people's demeanor in my neighborhood, their entire outlook on life itself sort of...shifted, I've noticed, in the week or so leading up to the anniversary. And honestly, if you lived through it in the city, you have every right to be. It's awful to realize how deeply it still affects all of us, especially considering that I often feel like possibly the only person in the country who acutely, specifically doesn't remember anything about that day, or even the weeks following after it. Like in that Alan Jackson song...I can't remember where I was anymore, what I was doing, what nonsense concerns a barely-adolescent me was dealing with...
I'm going down to Manhattan today, actually. I was once callous about this tragedy as a method of "shrugging it off" because I was a kid and saw no other way to deal, and I feel a sort of personal atonement is necessary for myself to sleep at night after that stage of my life. It's calling me in a way. My hearts still go out to the families and the victims who have to live with the aftermath every day. It's a pain I can't even begin to imagine.
(Apologies if I went too personal with it, and for trying to vent my insignificant private concerns.)

Not at all.
It's always touching to have someone share a 'shifting' of feelings towards something. It shows and promotes growth and maturity.
And honestly, I don't think that folks should feel guilty about a sense of detachment about the whole thing. It's part of our nature. It's part of why we build shrines and monuments, I think. Part to never forget and part to help break through the detachment for those who weren't there.

Re: To remember....
Not to worry. We all felt something that day one way or another.
For several days the only thing I can think of was I felt violated so to speak. That's the only thing I can describe it.
Then on the first anniversary I was in downtown on business I just assume I not have done (another story) but while there on a break I saw the Los Angeles City Fire Department passing by doing a memorial ceremony. Then I realized in a twist of faith maybe I was meant to be where I was on that first anniversary to see that ceremony as part of a personal healing so to speak.
