Philip Seymour Hoffman

I usually don't go for the celebrity tribute thing, but the news that Philip Seymour Hoffman has passed is sad.

I've seen him in a bunch of movies, and every time he's on screen, it's a treat. The most recent performance I enjoyed was an older one - Charlie Wilson's War. He was phenomenally funny in that. And not just his rant at the beginning (which was remarkably similar to John Malkovich going off in Burn After Reading, but I digress). He was brilliant through the whole film.

Now begins the sad but always interesting collecting of films of his that I haven't seen. RIP dude. You were great.

He also left behind three young children as well.

A tragic loss of a talented individual who had so much left to give. He will be missed.

The real measure of an actor is his ability to play different parts so well you never see them perform. Hoffman was great at this. Look at the character Dave mentions, Gus the gruff, world weary, totally masculine, CIA agent versus his Oscar nominated turn as Truman Capote. Hoffman was 5' 10" and had a great baritone stage voice but still managed to act "short" and effeminate to portray Capote. Great actor but poor guy obviously had some demons he couldn't shake.
