So, after posting an article that had parts right out of science fiction fantasy (anything to capture readers' attention and imagination), the author made corrections to remove the fiction stuff before I had a chance to read the insanity that was the source of all the commotion. Now the responses make sense.

It sounds like the implications in the original version of the article would make a good sci-fi disaster movie, where the main character(s) have to find a way to prevent the gas from going nuclear and blowing California into space.
